You've got 20k...GO

Discussion in 'Cruisers' started by Addict, Jul 19, 2013.

  1. So here's the question. You have 20K. What you buy probably has to last you the next 15 -20 years. New or Used.

    Limitations -
    1. It's gotta be a cruiser.
    2. You intend on continuing to modify the bike to your personal style over said time.
    3. You don't like HD sportsters.
    4. It'll be a commuter and weekend warrior. Weather dependant.
    5. You don't have to worry about pillion passengers.

    GO shopping.

M109R...only because of the cruiser constraint. (and modification)

    Else.....GS1200 (longevity)

  6. +1 for the 109.

I'll never buy a cruiser but if I did, it would be one of them
  7. What is this don't like Sporties? I'd be getting a XL1200R to go with my XL1200X.

Stock bars on 10" risers. Headlight fairing. Thunderheader exhaust. Really nice paint. High comp pistons. Cams. Tuned.

    Pretty much like this.

  8. What's with all the limitations? Its my $20k isn't it? LOL

    All right, I'll play.

    MV Brutale 800. That's a cruiser isn't it?
  9. Honda Shadow 250
  10. A..... A Honda Shadow? you have 20K and you want a Honda Shadow? really?

  11. I'm quite partial to the Diavel, might be able to grab a second hand one for 20k.
  12. Guzzi California, the new 1400, but not for $20K yet.
  13. The Rocket III is a lovely machine.

Part of the problem is that you're asking a bunch of people who, in the main, don't really 'do' scooters.

The 109R is a cruiser in the 'Judge Dredd/Akira' axis more than the Harley axis, and appeals to me a lot more.

Some of the 'power cruisers' like the Diavel (but probably outside budget) and the V-max would be a lot of fun, but something lower-stressed might be better for the 20 year span... though any of those you are going to struggle to stress on the road. ;)
  14. Hmm: most of the Diavels on Bikesales are under $22k. OK, I think that might be my recommendation. ;)
  15. And with the change buy a GSXR1000.......

  16. Yamaha MT-01 or the Warrior (if you can find a good used example).

A low kms Harley Street Bob, you'll get a 2012 that's not even run in for that money.

Or a Victory High Ball (less choice but less dollars).

Or a Triumph Thunderbird Storm (bugger all around so you won't see another one every day)

    http://www.bikesales.com.au/dealer/details/triumph-thunderbird-storm-2012-14387472?__Qpb=1&__Ns=p_IsPoa_Int32|0||p_RankSort_Int32|1||p_HasPhotos_Int32|1||p_Make_String|0||p_Model_String|0||p_YearMade_Int32|1||p_PriceSort_Decimal|1||p_PhotoCount_Int32|1&SearchAction=N&MileageTo=1579&__N=1432 604 1626 1429 1626 1428 1553 689 1480 4294962453 1579 1472 4294967248 4294956588&PriceFrom=1553&PriceTo=689&__Nne=15&__sid=13D6B13B780A

I suspect that it'll be easier to get parts 20 years down the track for the Harley than for the Victory and easier to get them for the Victory than the Storm (based mostly on sales volumes).
  18. Victory Vegas 8-ball (totally unbiased)
  19. "power cruiser" C'mon it's pushing a border between sports tourer and uber naked. I'm sorry but I cannot allow the Diavel. I will accept the Rocket III and 109R though.....and good choices might I add. (y)
  20. I had a 109 for a few years, after a few thousand K's the maintenance costs go up significantly. The infamous gearbox issues & general wear from such a heavy metal beast start to add up.
