Windows XP - recovering passwords????

Discussion in 'The Pub' started by Sir Skuffy, Oct 27, 2008.

  1. Hey all the IT people out there.

Can someone please help with the recovery of a password on XP???

I have a laptop at home and I have forgotten the password - yes, I am silliy, but have not used it for about 2 months......

    Assistance would be appreciated.

  2. 1) Download Hirens boot disk as an ISO.

    2) Burn it.

    3) Boot your laptop off it and go to Active password something or other.

    4) clear the passwords

    5) remove CD & reboot

    6) Happy dance...

  3. Thanks - but - is there a specific method to "burning" an ISO?

  4. yes there is

right click on the ISO file and open the file with "ISO recorder"

it will then give you the option to copy onto disc.
  5. There is Skuffy but whatever burning software you use should be able to deal with that. You will usually end up with one big file filename.iso or sometimes filename.img when you dowload your image. You need to tell the burning software it is an ISO image when burning. Otherwise you end up with that file copied to the CD and not the directory structure contained in that file.

If you get it right you should see directories and files when you load the CD. If you get it wrong you will get one big file only called the same as your downloaded image.

PS: Please record your Happy Dance and post up for all to giggle at when you finish.
  6. if you have problems I have this disk and others that work
it only takes about 5 to 10 mins
  7. Clearing passwords would not get back files in the users Documents folder though, no?
  8. This works much better, it figures out your original password

    download live cd

burn iso (google it if you don't know how)

    boot from the cd

it cracks the windows password file, just let it run, and it'll give you the passwords for every account on the machine. Takes 5-30 mins depending on password complexity.
  9. Excelent, didn't know about this CD, will be d/l'ing them now
  10. spotmau does heaps of other stuff, re-partition, etc
  11. http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php

partition, copy existing filesystems/partitions, nondestructively resize partitions/filesystems. $free

create custom windows install disks, unattended install, slipstream service packs/patches/drivers. $free

TestDisk is a powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). $free

    Bart's PE Builder

It will give you a complete Win32 environment with network support, a graphical user interface (800x600) and FAT/NTFS/CDFS filesystem support. Very handy for burn-in testing systems with no OS, rescuing files to a network share, virus scan and so on.
This will replace any Dos bootdisk in no time! also $free
