When are you supposed to clean your chain?

Discussion in 'Bling and Appearance' started by johnno, Apr 20, 2006.

  1. Is there a rule of thumb as to when, and how often you need to clean the bike chain? Please advise.

  2. I dont know if its accurate, but i was told to clean and lube the chain approx every 300km :-k This is after i had done about 1500km and still had not cleaned or lubed it 8-[
  3. Yep, that's right. Clean it when it's dirty. :)
  4. I'm with that one. Clean when dirty. :p

Lube... well, lube when it needs it. Chain might look too shiny... needs more lube. Or after it rains. Or every second tank works too.
  5. If you love your bike and have plenty of time, daily.

If you're a lazy chat, once a year will do.
  6. My bike manual said every 1000 km, also pain in the arse when you ain't got a center stand :?
  7. Maybe it's time you organize a Netrider rear stand group buy.
  8. I give a quick squirt every fill (300k-400k) and a proper degrease, clean and lube every wash (fortnightly at the very least)
  9. Thanks for all the replies and I'll monitor the chain accordingly!
  10. I Clean and lube every 1000 as per owners manual.
  11. Lube about every 3rd tank or when the rollers are starting to look shiny. Also beofre a long run etc. Normally clean every 2 to 3 weeks or about every 3 or so lubes.
