what's SS8

Discussion in 'Technical and Troubleshooting Torque' started by ibast, Mar 28, 2008.

  1. My standard fork oil Showa SS8. My first instinct is that this is SAE 8 weight oil, but something is nagging me that it is not.

    Does anybody know?

I plan on putting a heavier weight oil in as I am near maximum damping on both compression and rebound, but I need a point of reference.
  2. Fork oil

Use 10 wt good quality oil & make sure all the old oil is flushed out. Use the height method for fluid level as it's more accurate than capacity.
  3. Re: Fork oil

Thanks. That was my plan, but I was just checking SS8 was 8 weight.
  4. Just as well I checked. I need something heavier than standard.
  5. I go for 20W whenever I do a fork oil change - particularly if you've got damping adjustment, more viscous is better to start with then dial back.
