VTR1000F 2nd Hand bike. Cam bearing/timing chain problems ??

Discussion in 'Bike Reviews, Questions and Suggestions' at netrider.net.au started by dazza28, Jul 9, 2008.

  1. I'm looking at buying a 2002 VTR1000F and have been told some have had trouble with the cam bearings or timing chains.
Can anyone shed some light on this subject as I'm keen to buy one but don't want to be getting into a bike thats going to cost me $$$$ in repairs down the track.
    Cheers, Dazza.

  2. go to a specific forum for better advice, but I think they just have a dicky cam chain tensioner like many bikes. These can be easily replace with a manual tensioner if you are worried, but I think you may need 2 and they are not that cheap ($150?).

  3. A known weakness with the VTR1000, but it is a pretty cheap and easy fix. Listen for a particularly rattly noise at idle that dissappears once you place a load on the motor. Ignore it at your peril.

    Otherwise, a pretty bulletproof donk.
