[VIC] Smart Parking Card - an opportunity

Discussion in 'Politics, Laws, Government & Insurance' at netrider.net.au started by titus, Feb 13, 2008.

  1. A trial in Shepparton of a new kind of "in-car meter" or "smart" parking card (see here ) could revolutionise the way parking fees and fines are handled in Australia.

Why is this relevant to motorcyclists? Well, in Victoria it's not really, because we never have to pay :)

But to our interstate brethren, this could have far reaching implications. The proposed scheme relies on a pre-pay phone style card that is displayed IN the vehicle for parking officers to see, but contains the information about fees paid.

Now the problem here is security. As with e-tags, there is now secure way to display such a device on a bike. And since it has an inherent value (ie. pre-paid parking rights) it will be prone to theft.

My point is this: if and when such a scheme is introduced Australia wide (and traditional meters become redundant), authorities will have NO CHOICE but to allow free parking for bikes. And since bikes taking up money-earning parking spaces is not going to go down well with the Council revenue office, there will be only one option:

    FOOTPATH PARKING!

The time is right, people, to start lobbying for this wonderful Victorian innovation to go AUSTRALIA-WIDE so that your local council does not miss out in future revenue. Think about it. You know it makes sense

  2. Dear Titus,

Thank you for your suggestion with regard to footpath parking for motorcycles outside the state of Victoria.
We find you points to be logical, you proposals to be beneficial to all parties involved, your reasoning to display common sense, and the cost of implementation to be low.

As a result, we unfortunately can not follow your advice; as it it will not allow us the required level of blind, negligent and incompetent bureaucracy that is up to our standards.

    Best Regards,

  3. Don't forget the revenue raising! It's all about the money!!! I'm sure if our parking card got stolen off the bike, it would only be a $50 replacement fee...

  5. you mean in exactly the same way that we have free parking in ticket parking areas now because the ticket is prone to theft?

Come on! Nice try, but you don't really think anyone is going to think about bikes in such a policy are you? We'll have to keep doing our current thing of taking the ticket/card with us, getting the infringement notice and then trying to fix the mess afterwards!

It took me years to learn this kind of cynicism (I grew up in a small country town).

  6. Sorry to sound like PP here.

So now there's going to be records of where you parked and for how long available.
