Since 16/12/2009, police can now use metal detectors to find concealed weapons and search anyone in a designated area. The declaration of an area can be made by a senior on-duty officer. Police then could nominate an area - for example, Federation Square, a railway station or pub, a regional city nightclub precinct or even a street in which a private party is being held - and search anyone entering the area. The law also requires notice of designated areas to be published a week in advance in the local paper and Government Gazette. This was tested for the first time last Thursday.
