VFR Knocking Sound

Discussion in 'Technical and Troubleshooting Torque' at netrider.net.au started by Ruger, Aug 16, 2007.

  1. My '02 VFR is making a knocking sound when at idle, its not noticable or does not happen when above about 20kph. It also has to warm up to where the VTEC kicks in for it to appear. Any idea's what this could be?

  2. When were the valve clearances last checked?

On the smaller VFR's I've owned they all sound tappety at idle/low revs, and more noticeable at hotter temperatures.
  3. Are the tappets hydraulic on the V-tech?

If so, you may need to flush the oil sytem and put some good oil in.

I had a car that did this as the oil got towards the end of it's life. Particularly in winter.
  4. Mine ( 04 VTEC, 16,000km ) was in the shop a couple of weeks ago for a nasty "knocking sound"
It appeared a couple of months ago, and slowly got louder, no noise until warm ( after it idles down, 60 degrees + from memory ?? )
They spent six hours on it, checked valve clearances, cam chain tensioners etc. and found nothing wrong, but the noise dissapeared when it went back together, what the??
I've done 1000km since I suppose, all good so far.

  5. My 02 VFR has the same, HONDA specialist Pete the pom had a listen and said its just cam chain noise and nothing to worry about, it doesnt seem to cause any problems.

  6. 2 honda probs

    can anyone say

    reg/rect and cam chain tensioner
  7. cam chain/tencioner was the older v4's. pre VFR i think?
  8. vtec vfrs runh cam chains

honda still has probs with camchain tensioners in other models , same with reg/rects ,
