Understeer Explained

Discussion in 'Jokes and Humour' at netrider.net.au started by pvda, Mar 8, 2005.

  1. Found this on a car site today.......

    Understeer is when you see what you are going to hit.
    Oversteer is when it sneaks up on you from behind!

    So my spin on this (pun intended) with respect to bikes is;

    High side is when you see what you are going to hit.
    Low side is when you get to see the sky or ground or both before you hit something.
  2. Reminds me of my favourite car saying:

    When you oversteer, the passengers panic
    When you understeer, the driver panics

    .. which holds out. There's been a couple of times when I've been in a "controlled" oversteer and the passenger(s) were scared, and once when I lost the front wheels (and recovered) and the passengers didn't notice a thing.
  3. In my limited biking experience, I'd tend to think understeer would lead to a low side, oversteer (rear end slide) would give you a high side (if it gripped again). Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong! :D
  4. Brings to mind 'When I die I want to go peacefully in my sleep like my grandfather, not screaming in terror like his passengers'
