    Trail bike rider breaks neck

A TRAIL bike rider who broke his neck in a crash south of Sydney was lucky not to have been paralysed after friends took him to hospital in a car.

The 20-year-old Berry man was injured when his bike crashed after he tried to make a jump at Bowral yesterday, NRMA Careflight said.

His friends put him into a car and drove him to Bowral Hospital where it was revealed he had a broken vertebra in his neck and a torn larynx.

The friends were stunned to learn their actions could have left their companion a quadriplegic, Careflight said.

Staff at Bowral Hospital called CareFlight's specialist medical retrieval team to fly the man to Liverpool Hospital where he was in a serious condition.

NRMA CareFlight urged people not to drive anyone suffering a neck injury following a crash to hospital themselves but to phone triple-0.
  2. Whilst the friends intention was good, they broke the golden rule of never move a rider that has had a bad crash.

Hope the rider recovers without too many complications
  3. But don't leave an unconscious rider with a helmet on without checking airway!
I've seen too many dead riders because people were paranoid about protecting C spine and left the patient to die with a helmet on.

Us extreme caution and as many people as possible to carefully remove the helmet whilst maintaining neck alignment.

Once someone holds that head and neck, do not move it!

Airway and breathing takes priority over neck injury!
