Hi everyone. I haven't been on this site for a few days now. Last Sunday Melb had very hot conditions 40+ degrees & silly me decided to go for my daily riding fix on the bike. I rode towards Warrigul via Princess Hwy & back again. Went squid only wearing shorts & singlet. On the way back is when it really hotted up & started to get uncomfortable so was stopping at every few petrol stations (10-15mins) to take my singlet off to drench & get a drink of water as this was all it was taking before my top was bone dry again. My shins were raw red from getting blasted by hot wind so could only get pain relief by slowing down to below the 80km/h speed limit. I was about 30mins from home when I made a stop at a servo to again get a drink & soak my top. The water taps had been removed so I stopped at the next station only to see the same thing. This happened at 3 consecutive petrol stations so in the end decided not to stop anymore & continue towards home. It was now maybe 25mins at most since I had last taken in water. I was at the intersection on Princess Hwy (crn Narre Warren North Rd) waiting for traffic to clear (traffic lights were not operating) so rested the bike on side-stand & lifted visor to get some air inside helmet while other motorists were deciding who was crossing & when etc. Don't know if it was a coincidence or not but within moments I immediately felt strange sensation going thru my head & body. I then started to feel disorientated (dizzy) with the sensation or feeling like I didn't know where I was & not clear on what I was doing. What I realised afterwards was that I'd gotten off my bike leaving the bike at the lights & walking in a zig-zag fashion through the intersection & dropped a few metres from the the middle of the intersection when I no longer had enough strength in my legs to carry myself. A few motorists must've seen what happened & jumped out of their cars to my aid & dragged me off the highway. One of them removed my helmet & this is when I started really hyperventilating which only caused the level of disorientation & confusion to increase further. I only had enough energy to twice say between breaths "I can't breathe. I can't breathe. I need water." One of the fella's shouted to someone to get water who came back with 2 bottles. One they poured over me & the other was put into my mouth. Within a few minutes I was sitting up & feeling a lot better getting my senses back together again. I soon felt burning sensation in my leg & that's when I noticed below my right calf I had a good chunk of skin missing so somewhere along the line my leg has come into contact with the exhaust. I saw a biker stop on the side of the highway & without any prompting, walked back onto the highway & moved my bike off it as cars were simply going around it. He turned it off & came over to hand over the keys asking if there was anything else he could do. My mind wasn't right so I didn't even think of thanking him. Whoever you are, you're a champ. Looking back at it now, I can only presume I got off the bike & started walking through the intersection because there is a petrol station on the opposite side & that's where someone grabbed the cold water from. Have no idea if service attendant gave the bottles for free or if the person who got them paid for them. Either way, I appreciate the assistance they gave me. I've ridden in 40+ temperatures before (last summer) however this is the first time I experienced what I did & showed me how quickly you can deteriorate if & when the body is placed under heat stress, so unless I carry a backpack with water I will never ride in such temperatures again.
