Sports bike gearbox reliability

Discussion in 'Technical and Troubleshooting Torque' started by Bikeaddict, Aug 4, 2012.

  1. Can anyone give me some advice about how reliable gearboxes typically are on 1000cc sports bikes? Assuming that the bike has been serviced regularly and not raced. Generally how many km's can be put on a bike engine before the gearbox needs some attention?

  2. How long is a piece of string ?
It all comes down to how a bike is ridden. If it's been ridden at wide open throttle everywhere with epic clutchless shifts then probably not long. Ridden gently with clutch used. Lots of Km's 200,000km would be easily doable.
  3. GSX 1100 needed a new top gear set at 120,000km's. Everything else was good. lots of highway miles, and not enough oil changes.
harley 4 speed needed new box internals at about 40,000 km's. Braindead owner.
harley sportster toasted the box at under 10000 km;s. another less than smart owner, drained the oils and didnt fill the gearbox.
If you look after them they generally last longer.
