    "The Harley-Davidson Sportster is one of the world's great motorcycles, but also something of a freak. That is, while the XL appeared in 1957 with modern unit-construction crankcase, it ran iron heads like a Knuckle until 1985 and still today (2008 models) clings to a 1920s-style four-camshaft bottom carried over from the old 45 Flathead. In its original form as the K/KH (1952-56) Harley's first "modern" V-twin still was a flathead (or side-valve). Not until 1957 was an ohv top end plopped down Cinderella-like on the KH bottom to save the day and become the Sportster...
