  1. While it's exaggerated, you get the message...

    SCHOOL 1957 vs. 2007

Scenario: Johnny and Mark get into a fight after school.
1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up mates.
2007 - Police called, SWAT team arrives, arrests Johnny and Mark. Charge them with assault, both expelled even though Johnny started it.

Scenario: Jeffrey won't be still in class, disrupts other students.
1957 - Jeffrey sent to office and given a good caning by the Principal. Returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2007 - Jeffrey given huge doses of Ritalin. Becomes a zombie. Tested for ADD. School gets extra money from state because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario: Billy breaks a window in his neighbour's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.
1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normally, goes to uni, and becomes a successful businessman.
2007 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy removed to foster care and joins a gang. Psychologist tells Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their Dad goes to prison. Billy's Mum has affair with psychologist.

Scenario: Pedro fails high school English.
1957 - Pedro gets extra tuition, passes English, goes to Uni.
2007 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. Class action lawsuit filed by anti discrimination commissioner against Education Dept and Pedro's English teacher. English banned from core curriculum. Pedro given diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario: Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers, puts them in a model aeroplane paint bottle, blows up an ant bed.
    1957 - Ants die.
2007 - Local police & AFP called. Johnny charged with domestic terrorism, parents investigated, siblings removed from home, computers confiscated, Johnny's Dad goes on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario: Johnny falls while running during morning tea and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.
1957 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
2007 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in prison while Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.
  2. Johnny sues education department for injuries sustained in fall and mental anguish from being sexually abused by teacher. Wins $10,000,000 payout.
  3. Seriously, how did it get this way?? How does Santa get fired for saying Ho Ho Ho?? Do gay people really care if birds are called Fairy Penguins?
  4. PC is a boil on the a**e of society. It's done more than bad than good! Has it done ANY good???
  5. Ah, dont forget Pedro and his old man then sue the school for $300,000 because he cant read.
  6. Despite the school providing one-on-one tuition, etc...
  7. Now this one I call shenanigans on!

Everyone knows that woman teachers only get 3 months and a good behaviour bond for these sorts of offenses ...

You must have been talking about a male teacher hugging a female student.
  8. Just like this.

Its a whole debate in itself. See it uni's and secondary schools all the time.
I have constantly battled with the feeble minded. Not because they are un-educated or morons. But because they lack critical thinking. It is no longer encouraged as a skill.
  9. And of course one needs to know where the authors of books like that are coming from...

Kevin Donnelly - ex Kevin Andrews staff member etc. etc. and member of the loony right...

  10. Absolute claptrap neo conservative garbage.
Were you ever a teacher or are you speaking through that other orifice again?
  11. i'll tell you what happened.
parents began to rely on others in society to do the parenting for them, perhaps due to laziness, more likely because the economy is such that parents have to work ridiculous hours in order to adequately provide for their family financially. but the initial problem was, when these "others in society" decided that the children needed a good floggin' all these un-parents could see is dollar signs.

time for un-parents, to become parents again.
  12. Many children are no longer raised by their parents, but rely on the education system.

Many decades ago there was never the need for kindergardens, now they even have pre-kindergarden for kids as young as 3!

Knowing well of how the education system is assembled, I would fear for a generation that is left to its devices rather whilst parents pursue careers.
  13. Are these the same parents who insist on a brand new 4 br home, replete with 50" HD plasma, central heating/air condish, Landcruiser 4WD and an SS or XR8 as the second car, and who fuel the "buy now pay later" consumerism that Harvey Norman feeds on and who insist on trips to the Gold Coast, or out to Lakes Entrance in their $50,000 Jayco (towed by the 'cruiser, of course).

Of course, this is just one part of the whole problem where we've gone insane over political correctness, blaming everyone else except for ourselves for our self caused problems, where we insist on being "best friends" with our kids because we're too weak to say "NO" to them and why because such rot like "Super Nanny" thrives on pay television.

I firmly believe that the root cause of our problems stem from teh fact that we no longer have control over our family lives, that discipline is considered to be bad. A teacher can't discipline a student, yet that same student can assault the teacher then claim being a victim of sexual assault as a defence.

Smee being in the industry probably can relate more to this than I can, given that our kids are long out of school.

Oh, for the record, I survived 6 years at a Marist Brothers college (our old head teacher was recently convicted of assault on students for things that allegedly occured in the 70s).

So, my generation copped the cane or the strap on a regular basis. Yet I don't recall any of my school mates ending up on drugs, or in jail, or one of life's losers, living in homeless shelters, or sponging off the taxpayer on the dole.
  14. the education system has adapted, to the best of its ability, to cope with the pompous, arrogant, wankers (yep, im talking lil' johnny) that guided the private-school sector in to its glory days with its unfair funding to ensure only the offspring of the affluent can consistently attain good results.
THAT, is what is dumbing down the kids.
mucho respect to any teacher in the public system....
private teachers = sidchrome socket set
    public teachers = shifter
i know what i would rather be working on my bike with :!:
  15. Give the shit head kids of today a good foot up the arse and tell em to pull there head in i say..

Teachers send more work home with kids than ever before, so i ask what are they teaching them at school :? I did school work at school, not at home. Kids need to be out on there bikes, playing sport with there mates.

No i dont have kids and never will, but those things never done me any harm, and it made me the successful person i am today.
  16. Nope, not true, parents always complain we don't give them enough homework.
Only homework I give is what they don't finish in class or special assignments.
We can never seem to please anyone.
  17. Ok so you are a teacher Smee..

Dont you agree that if you could foot em in the arse they would be better behaved.. ??

So homework is only sent home when work isnt completed you say..
Is the primary or secondry ?? My mates son has just finshed year 7 and he got pumped with homework every day mate.. Poor kid .. :(
  18. high school and believe me there are times in the past I've wanted to plant a fist on some mouthy 17 year old but after 19 years experience I find that I don't have problems with kids anymore It's got to do with tolerance and understanding I suppose.
As for your mate's son it depends on the school and the teachers he has got.
I personally don't believe in pumping a kid with extra work ffs i hardly did homework as a kid why put them through it?
Yes they get work when not finished but sheesh in year 7?
less than one hour a night is plenty.
Kids will study on their own if they feel they need to and if the work is interesting or important enough.
    worked for me ;)
  19. Mate this poor kid was getting 3 hours a night ..

He was exhausted by weeks end..

I like your teaching style..
  20. heh, for the record, my mother is a teacher.
in fact, she taught ME physics, chem and 3U maths.
she is also the Union Rep for her region ;) :bolt:
