in response to this thread, and another I forget the title of (this one, kwaka 636)
"why doesn't the model name on the compliance plate match the manufacturing year?"

sometimes because the model name in the compliance documents is different to what you think it should be.

    search the database here
help on searching here (hint, put LC in the category to restrict to motorcycles, and change status to either CURRENT or ALL)

for example, the '04 to '07 CBR1000 RR is referred to as CBR1000RR
whereas the '08 to '14 models are referred to at CBR1000RR8

from there you can look at the approval document (letter) eg
and also Road Vehicle Descriptor which has a couple of pictures, and some tech specs, and things like rim widths too

another example for ZZR250 EX250H and RVD

the month and year on the Compliance plate will be the date it was issued, so as long as that matches the build year in the VIN (10th digit), all good

  2. interesting that not all the letters or numbers are used for year ID (no i, L, o, Q, U, Z, or zero, because too easy to confuse , O0Q, il1, UV, and Z2)
also, note year ID repeats every 30 years, starting with A in 1980, 2010, 2040 etc
