  1. Turning trees into liquid fuels has a problem, Lignins. The lignins make it more difficult to convert into fuels or base stocks for plastic. Standard practice requires toxic chemicals to break the sugars out. Researchers in Canada and the USA have now bread trees with Zip-lignins which can be broken apart with simple heat treatments. This opens the options in using fast growing tree varieties as a fuel stock.
