Powerlet, Cigarette lighter or direct to fuse box? How to power the GPS/Phone etc

Discussion in 'Riding Gear and Bike Accessories/Parts' started by friction, Sep 5, 2010.

  1. This is follow on from this now old thread: https://netrider.net.au/forums/showthread.php?t=93773 and https://netrider.net.au/forums/showthread.php?t=99021

I plan to put in the Eastern Beaver PC-8 (http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/Products/Fuseboxes/PC-8/pc-8.html) which will provide 6 switched and fused 12v sources, and 2 unswitched fused 12v sources. Now I need to be able to charge my iPhone.

I could use this: http://www.bluerim.com.au/powerlet/ppc-026-db-apple-3g-3gs-and-itouch-batttery-harness.html but if I change to a Google phone or get a permanent GPS, or if my pillion wants to charge her Nokia, I don't want to have to have to re-wire things.

So I was thinking I might get something like this: http://www.bluerim.com.au/powerlet/pkt-080-54-b-handlebar-outlet-kit-black.html which seems to fit the bill nicely - but $135?!?! For a socket, two wires and a fuse I don't need!? Highway robbery!

Powerlet is just the brand name for the DIN 4165 standard, otherwise known as the BMW Accessory plug, the Hella plug or Merit plug, so surely there's a cheaper handlebar mount than from Powerlet?

The other option is a cigarette lighter plug on the handlebar instead (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000MWZJGQ/?tag=netrider-20), but like Spots said in the second thread:

Just bend over and buy the Powerlet handlebar mount, go with a cigarette lighter plug, or can anyone recommend a non Powerlet brand DIN 4165 handlebar socket?

  2. Don't apologise Friction a very useful thread. You are not alone in these problems. Cheers.
  3. Ummmmm, you dont need waterproof it's only 12v. Have a look at your handlbar switch blocks, they're full of holes, even the kill-switch which faces up is not sealed. I've had standard cigarette sockets on both my bikes for years without problems (wired to the horn which is already fused, and ignition switched). just make sure they don't actually fill with water.
  4. Fair point hawklord. In the end I actually decided on:

Instead of the fusebox, a "three circuit solution" (3CS) (a relay which powers three modular plugs): http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/Products/Fuseboxes/3_Circuit/3_circuit.html (actually I got the Bandit version so no need for the positap: http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/Bike_Specific/Bandit/bandit.html)

And the combination USB/cigarette: http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/Elec__Products/Dual_Socket/dual_socket.html on the basis that for my Iphone I can use my existing USB charger, so my total spend is now $90USD including shipping.

The guy from Eastern Beaver will even attach the male plugs that come with the 3CS to the charger, so the extent of "wiring" is:

    1. Attach 3GS to existing plug for tail light
    2. Put charger on handlebar
    3. Plug charger into 3GS
    4. Attach 3GS to battery
    5. Put in 3GS fuse
  5. +1 found those links quite useful
