Planning tour, Melb-Coolangatta, help needed

Discussion in 'Roads, Touring, Journeys, and Travel' started by gix750, May 30, 2006.

  1. In mid August I intent to ride my bike from Melbourne to Coolangatta meet with the family, they are flying up, I am riding.
I have never done a trip this long before and I am a little apprehensive.
Does anyone have a route they take? Bearing in mind that it’s just coming out of winter. I wanted to go via the Alpine Way but thought Mt Hotham would be snowed in. I am giving myself three days to get up, I don't want to travel a boring Hwy all day.
Any help would be appreciated as I am a touring newbie. The only tour I did was Tazzie but I was with 20 other riders.

  2. Must have missed this one the first time.

Haven't done much touring south of Sydney apart from Canberra a few times and some OK back roads running around the back of the Hume.

Get some maps from RACV and try and do the following at least once - Putty Road, across to Buckets Way and then up Thunderbolts. Also the road from Glenn Innes to Grafton and then left up the Summerland Hwy to Casino which isn't too far to Tweed Heads. Won't be much traffic on these roads during the week. Then coming back you've got to try and fit in the Oxley Highway that runs west from Port Macquarie and you can ride back down Thunderbolts.

Enjoy and let us know how it all goes
