This is going to be a nice easy and fairly short ride - the route is quite scenic, but doesn't involve anything too technical, so it's perfect for learners - and it's also a proper "brunch ride" rather than a full day commitment, so with any luck this means more people will be able to come along.

We'll meet as usual at the services on the M4 at Eastern Creek - the westbound one this time (ie the go-karts side of the M4). Let's meet in the McDonald's carpark this time - seems to be more logical for those who will be requiring nourishment before we get going.

The plan is then to take the M4 to Mamre Rd, then head down via Luddenham, Silverdale and The Oaks to the Lake Burragorang lookout for some photos, and then push on to Picton for brunch. Most I expect will return via the Northern Rd and Luddenham again, but of course Picton is a pretty good launching point for a range of other return routes, for those who want to take the long way home. Full route further down the page.

Brunch options are open for discussion - does anyone know anywhere that serves a decent brunch in Picton? I looked up the George IV but they don't open until lunchtime.

Incidentally, I plan to stop on the way back at Macarthur Anglican School (http://goo.gl/maps/9mbHH) to have a look at a show they're running that day called "Men and Machines" - $10 a head, show includes motorbikes, ski boats, mechanical bull, rock climbing, hotrods, lawnmower racing, helicopter joy flights and a bunch of other stuff. Sounds pretty good to me - if anyone wants to join me, the more the merrier (more info at https://www.facebook.com/Macarthur.Men.and.Machines).

IMPORTANT: Make sure you have read and understood the "Supervision" section below.

    DATE: Saturday 19 October 2013

DURATION: 174km/2h40m total riding time - approx 3.5 hours return to the M4 McDonald's including brunch (longer if you want to check out "Men and Machines" with me).

DESTINATION: as yet undetermined brunch venue at Picton, via Silverdale and Lake Burragorang. Brunch at 10.30am, with opportunity for an extended ride afterwards for those who have the time (I expect this will be decided at Picton over brunch).

    1. WESTBOUND McDonald's M4 Eastern Creek (http://goo.gl/maps/Sy1ZJ) - the go-karts side of the M4 - meet by 8.20am for 8.30am departure.
    2. Luddenham Village Cafe (http://goo.gl/maps/SXaCu) - meet by 8.50am for 9am departure.

Please ensure you have a full tank when you begin. Both meeting points are adjacent to Caltex service stations.

Anyone - these rides are learner friendly and all are welcome - the only rule is no idiots. By that I mean we stick to the speed limit, there will be no wheelies or dangerous/reckless riding, and if you want to overtake you do so when safe in the next lane to the right - not over unbroken white lines, not on the left, and not within the same lane as the person you're overtaking.

Note however that some parts of this ride will be on roads which have posted limits above 80km/h, and some learners might not be comfortable on those roads given the faster other traffic which might be around. You must ride your own ride - do not try to keep up with others if you're not comfortable going as fast as they are.

This is a supervised ride - please make sure you understand the "Supervision" section below. If at any time you're feeling pressured by faster vehicles behind you, just find a safe spot to pull over and allow them to pass. The last rider in the group will catch up and wait with you until you're ready to get back on the road again.

    ROUTE (http://goo.gl/maps/dAEnt)
    8.20am - Eastern Creek group meets at M4 McDonald's WESTBOUND (http://goo.gl/maps/Sy1ZJ)
    8.30am - depart M4 McDonald's
    - take Mamre Rd exit and turn left
    - right at Luddenham Rd
    - left at Elizabeth Drive
    - right at The Northern Rd

8.50am - arrive at Luddenham Village Cafe (http://goo.gl/maps/SXaCu)
9.00am - depart and head north back up The Northern Rd
    - left at Park Rd
    - left at Silverdale Rd
    - left at Silverdale Rd again
    - right at Burragorang Rd

9.50am - arrive at Lake Burragorang lookout (http://goo.gl/maps/VVJpt)
10.00am - depart and head back down Burragorang Rd
    - right at Barkers Lodge Rd

10.30am - brunch at Picton (venue TBA - suggestions please?)
11.30am - back on the road
    - take Remembrance Driveway towards Razorback/Camden
    - exit from Camden Bypass at Narellan and turn left
    - left at Cobbity Rd (for those joining me) - otherwise continue along The Northern Rd and back the same way we came on the way down. Optional stop at Luddenham Village Cafe again on the return trip.

Those going straight back should expect to be back at the M4 McDonald's at approx 12:45pm, which should mean most of you can get home in time for a late lunch - which is the main idea behind these rides after all.

This is how it's going to work:
    1. The person riding behind the leader is automatically the corner marker.
    2. At an intersection, the leader will hold out his left hand and point to the side of the road, to let the corner marker know it's time to pull over.
    3. The corner marker pulls over as directed, with their indicator on in the direction of the turn.
    4. All riders pass the corner marker and proceed in the direction indicated.
    5. When the last rider - the "Tail End Charlie" (TEC) - passes the corner marker, the TEC gives the corner marker a big wave to let them know there's no-one else coming.
    5. The corner marker is now the new TEC.

It is the leader's responsibility to ensure he doesn't lose sight of the corner marker in his mirrors, otherwise the corner marker will become lost and so will everyone else. It's the TEC's responsibility to make sure the corner marker knows they're the TEC. It's everyone else's responsibility to ensure they don't wave at the corner marker unless they're the TEC!

Please make sure you understand the above before coming on this ride. Don't be afraid to post in this thread if there's any part you don't understand. If you come along you will need to know how it works.

As usual, if the weather is uncertain, I will make the call by 6am and post here to say whether or not the ride is going ahead.

Who is in? As always, suggested changes to the route are always welcome.

When replying, please state whether you'll be starting at the M4 McDonald's at 8.20am or at Luddenham Village Cafe at 8.50am.
  2. Weather's looking good - high of 26-28, and sunny all day! Looking forward to this ride.

So far we have about 8 who have shown interest altogether - all from outside Netrider. Anyone from in here coming along?

If so, could you please confirm where you'll be joining the group - either westbound M4 McDonald's (http://goo.gl/maps/Sy1ZJ) at 8.20am or Luddenham Village Cafe at 8.50am (http://goo.gl/maps/SXaCu)?
