A new automatic number plate recognition system has helped police to identify unregistered vehicles and unlicensed or disqualified drivers.

Cars were photographed as they drove down Halls Road in Carrum Downs, in Melbourne's south-east.

The registration plate was then fed into an onboard computer, helping police weed out unsafe vehicles or motorists banned from driving.

The new technology was used in a two day operation at Carrum Downs and helped police find 19 unregistered vehicles, four unlicensed drivers and nine disqualified drivers.
