New rider from Melbourne SE suburbs

Discussion in 'Welcome Lounge' at netrider.net.au started by garudabird, Oct 9, 2015.

  1. Very new rider and just bought my first bike, a ninja 300. Only riding around my estate at the moment getting used to how things feel and trying to get things happening automatically before heading out into the real traffic. Being 46 yo I have had my car license for a long time but it feels like I'm learning all over again - manually changing gears is a very new concept to me as I have been a very lazy driver! Loving it so far, and keen to get some experience under my belt. Cheers.

  2. Welcome mate, lots of good advice on here so have a virtual wander around and have a squizz for tips for new riders. Also try and watch "twist of the wrist" on youtube for some basic cornering and steering tips, very useful. Try and make the Saturday practice sessions in Elwood each week as this will also help a lot, plus you get to meet like minded people, and can also link up to Learner friendly Sunday rides plus others (search threads for details).

Enjoy your new bike, its a fun little unit to ride!

  5. Welcome.

Where in the SE are you as there may be local riders that are happy to give you a hand getting upto speed?

  6. Welcome :)

I was also a late starter, and I spent a month riding around my back streets until I was game to go out on the highway. Don't rush, you'll get there. If you start feeling flustered, pull over and take a few deep breaths, just watch the traffic go by, and relax. Worked for me.

Can highly recommend Saturday practice in Elwood. When you're ready, go to that thread, give a shout, and someone will probably offer to escort you there. If you like, drive the car there first and see what it's all about.

  8. Welcome to netrider garudabirdgarudabird, as GreydogGreydog and Lazy LibranLazy Libran said when you're confident enough you should head down to Saturday practice in Elwood. Starts at 10am. I highly recommend it. I live in Keysborough so I'd be happy to come round you're way to ride with you on the way.

    Stay safe and stay uprite.

  10. These Saturday practices sound good. Once I am confident enough to make the trip I'll shout out for an escort. Going for just my second ride this afternoon/evening around the local streets.

    btw I'm from Berwick.

  11. Yep, no hurry. Go to the Saturday thread when you're ready and ask for an escort. I'm in Eumemmerring so, assuming I'm going that week, I might be able to escort you. You'll need to be comfy doing 80kph at least.

Again, no hurry though - best to get some riding around your local streets first. Large car parks (when shop closed) or industrial estates on the weekend are good too.

Edited to add: of course, if you want to see what it's all about, feel free to drive down.

  14. Went for just my second ride yesterday. Must have rode for an hour or more just around the local area. Then, I got caught in the downpour and ended up soaked to the bone! Interesting experience, good to get that one out of the way early on :]

  16. I had to pull over, I just couldn't see anything. I ended up sneaking my way back home which wasn't that far luckily. Had to have the visor up and went real slow, I was a bit frazzled! haha

  17. You made it so good job! Next investment, rain gear and some anti beading anti fogging stuff for the visor.
