New Melbourne rider... Hello!

Discussion in 'Welcome Lounge' at netrider.net.au started by Lownslow, May 6, 2014.

  1. Hello forum! New rider here from Melbourne. Took delivery of my bike yesterday and thought it would be a good idea to sign up here BEFORE I had my first stupid question to ask. (Watch out for that tomorrow... Or maybe later today!)

Taking the bike around the backs streets so far has shown me what a poor rider I am and I have accomplished my first drop (and pick up/restart flooded bike) as well! I certainly look forward to getting a lot more competent.

  2. Welcome to NR and join the club ( everyone drops their bike once, but may never tell you)

    Ride safe :)
  3. Hello and welcome! If you are anywhere near the Melb practice sessions then go along, they'll help! Either that or put your hand up for a mentor there's loads of really helpful people in Melbourne who'd be only too happy to come do a few rides near you and help with that steep learning curve :)
  4. Practice sessions sound like a good idea, didn't know there was such a thing. I'll do a search of the forums to find some details.
  5. Here ya go, I looked them up for you.
Basic Skills Practice sessions - https://netrider.net.au/threads/saturday-10am-basic-skills-practice.115150/
And then, when you're ready, regular learner rides - https://netrider.net.au/threads/sunday-learners-new-riders.111780/
I think they're the correct two threads?
For both if you would like an escort to the start point just post in the relevant thread and someone will likely be able to come and either lead you in so you don't get lost, or protect your 6 whichever you need, just ask and you should (usually) receive :)
GOD how I wish we had these in Bris when I first started riding, they sound SO helpful to newbies!

And then of course the mentoring thread is where you go to put your hand up for some 1-on-1 help from an experienced rider. I have a mentor and we catch up every 3 or 4 weeks I guess. He tells me when he sees me doing something silly (like forgetting my roadcraft for a moment and approaching the crest of a hill in the right hand wheel track) and explains why it's not a good idea. He's always available on the phone if I'm about to go and push a boundary and need a pep talk or a bit of technique advice. We drink lots of coffee and he has started giving me pop quizzes :) Now, you can't have my mentor coz he's awesome and I won't let you have him. Plus he's like 1500km away from you. But if you want a mentor (and there are some amazing ones in Vic as well), the thread to post in is here : https://netrider.net.au/threads/mentors-tutors-to-help-newer-riders.63859/

  6. Welcome to Nutrider!
  7. Welcome :)
Second the idea of visiting Saturday Practice. Hawklord and GreyBM will take you under their wing and show you the ropes. Just be aware that practice is cancelled if the weather is bad - Hawklord normally posts cancellations by 8am on the day. The location/time etc. in the first post is still correct.

  8. Welcome.
Where are you based, and what did you take delivery of ?

As crap as the weather has been lately I think you can be forgiven for over balancing or slipping on a wet road.
