  1. one of the few* electric bike reviews that hasn't just gushed about the pros of the electric bike and has used an ICE bike as a control.

    fuel cost difference is huge.

    *it's not like i really go looking for these things.

  2. An interesting report. I would have liked to see the zero tested against a base model thumper instead, and the servicing costs taken into account. Many a BMW rider lament the cost of servicing.

    The authors ultimate choice would be the zero though.
  3. Only if they're stupid enough to take it to an official dealer. I've said it before and I'll say it again; if you go to one of the independent specialists or, better still, do your own spannering (piece of the proverbial on any of the twins and the longitudinal Ks), a BMW is probably about the cheapest big bike to run that you can find, particularly as the kms stack up and the age goes beyond the point where the Japanese manufacturers lose interest.
  4. Interesting yes, but it's not really an apples/oranges comparison I don't think. Especially on the suspension & ride fronts.

    ICE vehicles have pretty much settled into a loose formula, with the odd exception (rotary engines for example), but electric vehicles are still very ecclectic, give them another 10-20 years of development & they will be viable & possible even surpass our current benchmarks for ICE vehicles.

    Interestingly, the first vehicle ever to reach 100km/h was in 1899 & it was electric!


    It would be a different present now if the electric vehicle had been the one pursued.
  5. Yes electric cars were very popular as city vehicles for women around 1900 since they were easier to drive and maintain.
  6. c1900 the three realistic contenders for road vehicle power (electric, IC and steam) were pretty evenly matched in terms of performance, reliability and cost. That the IC petrol engine came out the winner and received the next 100 years of automotive development effort and money was a matter of chance and commercial acumen on the part of individual promoters and engineers rather than being due to any inherent superiority of the technology itself.

    Indeed, for niche applications steam and electric were favoured over IC. Heavy haulage prior to WW2 was primarily a job for steam and there have been huge fleets of battery electric urban delivery vehicles successfully operating in many countries until quite recently.

    Motorcycles, of course, have been a rather different area because a bike simply can't (or couldn't) carry the necessary weight and bulk of the batteries or steam generation plant necessary for the other propulsion options. Mind you, it was probably 15 years after the birth of the motor-car before the IC petrol engine became small and light enough to make a motorcycle a practical proposition. Yes, I know about the experimental efforts of Herr Daimler et al but they bore only a limited resemblance to the motorcycle as we know it whereas by 1900 we were seeing machines which, if you squint a bit, are recognisably the ancestors of the modern bike.
