  1. Hey all. Just looking at my options - as one should when looking at starting a business. :) One of these options brought up in class is to open a 'Budget' riding gear store that caters for Male and Female riders. A place folk can go in and try gear on that they may otherwise have had to purchase online (from interstate or o/seas suppliers). This option also works best for me as it is the 'cheaper option'... has fewer start up costs in terms of getting stock in. :)

Could you please spare a minute or ten  to answer the following questions:

    10. Do you see the need for a store that deals exclusively in 'budget' riding gear?

I reckon there would be a market for it, particularly for cash-strapped newbs and occasional riders/pillions. For a young beginner, say a student, finding the money for both a bike and all the gear can be a stretch. A 'budget' gear store would be ideal for them.

    2. Male or Female?
    Female

    3. How important is wearing the correct motorcycling gear to you?
    Very important

    4. Have you purchased motorcycling gear in the past?
    Yes

    5. Where/How did you purchase?
Retail outlet - Adelaide, Bills Motorcycles, Yamaha Pitmans and Adelaide Motorcycle Accessories, Walden Miler. Melbourne, Peter Stevens, Elizabeth St.

    6. RE: Retail stores - Are you happy with the range of products available in terms of...

    a) Brands - Yes, plenty of brands available
    b) Style - No, mostly very small sizes, boots are a whole nother story
    c) Size - No, I'm not a size 10 - have a men's jacket which is at least a couple of sizes too big to get it over my hips. Pants are men's pants which aren't a fantastic fit but I was able to get changes made when they were put together (walden miller). Leathers off the shelf are virtually not an option with what's available in stores.
    d) Color/Design - No
    e) Pricing - Most things are very expensive and most things that are cheap online I can't just buy because of the size issues .. most stores don't stock them so I can't try them on and then just order online.
    f) Female Riding Gear - as above

    7. Have you purchased 'budget' riding gear in the past?
no, but would if it was recommended

    9. For those who answered no to Q 7 - Is there a particular reason why you haven't purchased lower cost riding gear in the past?
size mostly - can't try them on and if I get particular sizes ordered in, there's either the requirement or expectation to buy it

    10. Do you see the need for a store that deals exclusively in 'budget' riding gear?
Yes, as long as its still good quality

    11. Would you visit such a store?
    Probably

    12. How far would you be willing to travel to visit this store?
interstate (i.e melbourne) - Melbourne or Sydney

    13. And finally, would you feel more inclined to visit this store if it also offered customers the opportunity to try on and order products from better known brands such as IXON, DriRider, Dainese, Joe Rocket etc etc? yes, absolutely

  19. Youve got it all wrong Rosie!...

    Who needs anymore bike stuff?

You need to go into business selling personalities...god knows LadyYamahas' in need of a transplant stat!, the bitter and twisted old hag one is wearing a little thin.

Best of luck with anything you decide to do...I'm sure you will do it and do it well :)

  20. Yes...I'm kicking tyres. You make it sound like a bad thing - I assure you it's not..especially when considering just how much money is involved in setting up a business such as this. And considering I'm a non-wage earning, non home owning single mum studying a small business management course 4 days a week, the banks don't want to know about me and to be honest, I'm not sure I want to know about them either - no use applying for a business loan or an overdraft in the hope I'll be earning enough $$ from the business to pay it back. Surely you can understand my hesitation.

In researching whether I can afford to use my own savings to do this, I have to remind myself that the purpose of the store should not be forgotten - Its purpose being:

To stay true to the store's aim - let's say I open with 5 brands...for example: Ixon..DriRider..Joe Rocket..Laro Leathers and RJays.

Most of the above brands have more than one product in their female range. Say I'm looking at getting in 3 different styles of Ixon jackets in..3 different styles of Ixon pants ...3 different stles of DriRider jackets ...3 different styles of DriRider pants...etc etc.

Then there's sizing. Say I order 5 sizes in each of the above styles... XS, S, M, L, XL.

And then there's color/design. Many of the above products come in different colors/designs. So I also need to consider whether it's beneficial ordering in different colors/designs in the different products.

And then the fun begins. I need to work out how much all this is going to cost. What makes this difficult is that most of the distributors above (apart from Laro Leather's who have been absolutely fantastic!) will not give out their wholesale prices until I have a shopfront (which is difficult cos I'm not signing a lease until I know I can afford to do this and I wont know that until I know how much the products cost at wholesale)...and one of the distributors I spoke to said they wouldn't be able to give me prices until I've actually placed an order with them. :?

So I play the guessing game. I imagine how much they would charge at wholesale for their products.

Tally it all up and the end amount is a rather large sum.

And that's just stock. Initial start up stock. Other START-UP COSTS include:

    Leasing a store.
    Insurance, legal & accountant fees
    Advertising and promotion
    Fixtures and fittings..equipment hire
    Security
    Shipping and freight
    etc etc etc etc

Now LadyYamaha can you see why I'm kicking tyres? And why my bank balance suddenly looks inadequate?

The blood hasn't returned to its normal temp - if you intended for your post to work for me you are mistaken. I already have the determination...even after looking at the figures I still want to do this with a passion, I still want to take the risk, but I've three kids and no house and that money I have in the bank is all I've got. I've been asking myself for some time now whether it's worth my while doing this...whether it's worth the risk and I assure you LadyYamaha, there is a great risk.

Give me $40000 and I can do this. Otherwise shut up.
