Methods to lower my vtr250

  1. Hey all, after about 5 rides and 3 people telling me I look awkward on my bike i think I might have to consider ways to lower the bike. I am also unable to move the bike much eg reverse into a spot, I always need someone to pull/push me because I have only my toes on the floor and my legs straight. Also numerous times I've slipped my foot cause the floor is wet (eg yesterday in the rain).

    I could not find anything about adjusting suspension hardness in my manual and a friend suggested adjusting it to make it softer so it sits lower when I'm on it. He also couldn't find any links for my bike and reckons that I might need to get the spring cut.

    Anyone with an 09 vtr250 who has done anything to lower it? I reckon 1-2inches is plenty. Thanks
  2. You could look in to adjusting the suspensions and what not but they would be costly.

    The cheapest way of lowering your bike would be to get a new custom seat made that is thinner to acommodate for your needs. If you can't find a place in Sydney then there is a shop in Melbourne that specialises in this that you could post your seat to and they will send it back to to you once done:

  3. I cant help re the lowering except a good mechanic should be able to do that, but dont forget, boots with extra deep soles will give you more height and may be a cheaper option.
  4. i bought some boots yesterday as sneakers were too slippery in the rain and also not waterproof. i will test them out next time and see if they help.

    there are no lowering links for my bike. so my options are; get seat modified or the suspension cut... both irreversible and probably costly :( i hope the shoes does the trick.. that or i will have to live with tip toeing.
  5. First step will be to get the preload set right for your weight, if it is too high, the suspension won't move when you get on.

    Being female, it is probably setup for someone a bit heavier (assuming here)

    Your rear suspension at least should be adjustable for preload, it uses a stepped collar & a C spanner, the C spanner should be in your tool kit under the seat.
    rear shock.

    This is not your shock, but the collar works the same: about 1/3 the way up from the bottom is the stepped collar, it is on the lowest setting here (least amount of preload) which will give the most movement of the bike when you get on.

    I would start there, see what setting your shock is on & adjust lower if necessary.

    I would suggest setting the preload correctly for your weight, (you'll need a friend for that), rather than just making it softer, but it should work as long as your not on the softest setting already.
  6. thanks MV - yes my friend suggested doing that for my bike, he will probably come over the next weekend and see what he can do. i have not read anything about this in my user manual so was weary that i couldn't adjust this (as there were no instructions but there were instructions to adjust everything else). do all bikes have the ability to set this stuff?
  7. just get the seat shaved.
    try auto trimmers or ask your mechanic or local bike shop who does it local to you, who they use or reccommend... they can shave the foam to suit, maybe scallop it or make it narrower at the front, then re-trim it... probably around 150-200 bucks depending on materials used.
    you should get at least an inch lower, plus your pegs will now feel slightly higher, all the better to grip the tank with your thighs; and you may find the bars slightly closer if they shave more out at the front.
    sitting well forward gives you better control.

    if you lower the suspension you lose out on handling.
    if the pre-load is to soft you lose out on handling.
    if you do opt to mod the suspension get it done professionally.

    oh and don't wear sneakers on a bike, that just makes you look like a fool
  8. Bollox what people say - and learn to live with it.

    VTR250 is a pretty low bike to start with - just imagine what issues you will have when you upgrade.

    the best way to move a bike around when you can't touch the ground is getting off and pushing it - your bike is lights so it will be easy once you get the hang of it.

    I'm with Monkeyman if you NEED (you don't *really* need to though) to have it lowered just get the seat shaved.
  9. Do you have the VTR250 model with adjustable preload?

    This topic has done the rounds on NR several times... never with a satisfactory answer. I'd be cautious about changing the preload solely for the purpose of changing ride height. You are going to radically modify how the bike handles and responds to bumps.

    Hope the seat and boot option gives you your confidence, if not, professional work will be required. The best is a shock rebuild with a matching adjustment at the front end. Next best, lowering links.

  12. LOL sensational.
    Be careful lowering bikes... You lower the roll center of the bike, making it not turn as well. Your pegs will scrape and so can the engine casings.
    But if you must. First shave the seat and get high compression foam put in.
    If that is still not enough. Then the front triple clamps can be run down the forks a little. And yes, changing the dog bones on the rear suspension is the only way to go. Do not let anyone near your springs with a hack saw.
    For mine, start practising your slow speed riding skills like your life depended on it. Also start thinking ahead of yourself. How and where you will park. or pull up for that matter.
    Make life easier for yourself by thinking ahead. Well ahead. It will save you heaps in cash though things like this and stupid falls.

  14. i have bought proper motorcycle boots now. however before that it was either sneakers or heels... so i choose the best out of the bad.

    no idea! this is where i hope someone with a 09 model can say "yes i've done it!". there are no lowering links so have already considered that.

    lol goz... i'm not sure how i'm going to fit my feet under the gear shift with those babies on. i will test out my new shoes and see how that goes. and considering playing around with the pre load thing a little. if going up a slight incline (even like 5 degrees) i need assistance from someone to pull me backwards or even push me forwards. and if i'm trying to stand where there is a dip (like if i have one wheel on the road and one wheel on the driveway, i cannot reach and have almost dropped my bike once because i stopped in this position and the floor was not there when i stuck my foot out). i also cannot stand up if i'm faced down a hill (eg my steep driveway) so in situations like these, is there anything else i can do? do i have to lean my bike to one side and stand on one leg only?
  15. you slide off the seat - one foot firmly down. I was riding a friends bike once - he told me it was hilarious seeing me stop at lights & intersections, I felt pretty comfy doing it though, on that bike i could only get the tip of my toe on the ground - 0 hold on the ground on a totally flat road.

    I promise you will get used to it - and then you wont be forever stuck with a very small selection of bikes.

    Like I said before - get off the bike and push it - I do it all the time.

    To reiterate the point I didn't make very well, set the suspension for your weight, that may or may not fix the height problem, but it's definitely the first place to start.

  17. You crack me up. Serious ... not having a go.
    Uphill incline.
    You can touch the ground with two toes. So You can put your right foot on the brake. Left foot flat on the ground. Slide your butt across to the left a little. You can slip that clutch all the way through a "PINK" song and it wont burn out. Keeping a little rear brake on against a slightly slipping clutch with enhance the gyroscopic effect of your crank. ( Go rev rev and slippy slippy and it will sit up all by itself ) Eyes up and level. Look left. Go more rev less slippy and away we go.
    Going backwards can be harder for the vertically challanged. Use your brain. more than your skills. And as your skill are lacking. Don't put yourself in the bad place in the first place. You know if you stop one wheel up on the drive and one down you will fall. SO don't do it there or anywhere. Try to avoid steep backwards. If you have to do little inclines. Keep the bike running and in gear with the clutch in. You might have to use both feet so the clutch will now become your rear brake as the front one wont work real well going backwards. Come in and park to the left. And reverse back to the right a little. That way if the bike over balances or what ever it will fall to the left. And you being a smart thinker will always be ready for that.

  18. Brett, suspension guru's will disagree with you about the dog bones as the only and best way to go. It will lower the bike sure, but I've heard a few guru's say that properly changing the suspension length is the better way to go. It's more expensive yes, but it messes with the bike handling the least... having said that though, many riders have gone the dog bone path.

  19. Ahh just cut the springs I did it to a classic vespa, fitted white walls and it was nice as.... Although I didn't need to do it to reach the ground, but 4" out of the height was nice.... Didn't do anything for the handling, there isn't any handling to begin with, suspension is over rated anyway ;) I mean when I was a kid I used to ride a bmx without suspension LOL

    Seriously get the seat reshaped drop the forks in the clamps a few mm and look into some dog bones or a custom spring for the shock... It's really easy.... I've lowered everything I own, there's a way to modify anything!

    I am 5ft 2 and hubby dwarfed my 650 vstrom with dog bones, lowered the front forks, handlebar risers and got my seat shaved at Hy Tone at Riverstone. I then needed the side stand cut down because if you stop on a slight rise on the left you can't put the thing down, but if you cut the side stand down too much you can't pick the thing up. When it comes to parking I have to think ahead and then to create the most amusement I get out my little bike mover I won in a raffle that is on rollers and slips under the side stand...but if all else fails hubby parks it.
