Memories of Bathurst Easter races

Discussion in 'Racing, Motorsports, and Track Days' at netrider.net.au started by John_M, Jun 26, 2010.

  1. The following photos are from back in 1980, 81 & 82 and they were well received on another Forum (so why not here too). There were not too many cameras around then and it seems too few photos taken of all the action and fun. For any Netrider old farts, I hope they bring back memories and a bit of nostalgia for everyone :).

I took the following mouldy old slides on the way to Bathurst, at the track, and on the journey home from the Easter races. In those days, from memory they were sponsored by Golden Bread.

On the Newell Highway, we'd usually pull up at the Goondiwindi Apex Park for the first night from Brissy headed south, or in a rest area at say Moree; then beside the road somewhere on the way home. A few drinks would help keep some warm.

Camping by the roadside would be cold and hard, but all we needed.

Goondoowindi or Mooree, in a Apex Park? :D

  2. Greg Hansford was always to quick to get him in frame close up!

Then there is the tyranny of Bathurst for bikes: the crashes against the barriers. These few at the start of The Esses. Note the mats against the Armco.

  10. Again, the long journey up the Newell means camping beside the road when it gets too cold, dark or tiring. A good fire, a few drinks, and great friends and memories.

  12. I remember the pressure to can them by the police and pollies at the time; but in the end I think there were other reasons.

Very bad behaviour was certainly a concern (and entertaining). The track is not exactly safe for bikes - there were no run-off areas and lots of hard barriers; but then that was the case for most tracks back then.
