  2. Well, now the semi-finalists have been decided, two by penalty shoot-outs, it is time to suggest a drastic revision to the scoring methodology of soccer, at least at the World Cup Level?

The ultimate form of scoring in soccer, rugby league, rugby union and AFL is a goal, or try, in running play. Second prize in all but soccer is a behind in AFL and converted goals, field goals or penalty goals in the two rugby codes.

Soccer teams (obviously) need to be encouraged to score goals in open play, rather then grind out draws and hope on the skills of the goal-keeper to help them survive the inevitable shootout. It is abundantly obvious that teams that have been inadequate to score goals in open play have resorted to this plan, and succeeded, when more enterprising teams have been stifled out of open play scoring, then defeated by the turn of a card in penalties.

So let's suggest that a goal scored in open play count for two points, a penalty goal for one point, and that a game which is at a stalemate at the end of 90 minutes be replayed until a result is secured, dumping the contrived penalty shootout altogether. Negative, stifling play would be thus discouraged, dives in the penalty area would be lessened because they would bring less reward, and crowds would get to see the best expression of the game, two teams stiving by every means possible to score goals in open play, and achieve a result....
