importing bikes from OS

Discussion in 'General Motorcycling Discussion' started by outactrl, Mar 17, 2006.

  1. does anyone know much about importing bikes from os?
a mate over seas has a R6 that he can get to me at a great price, (including delivery) but i have no idea about what it would take to get it on the road, its a 2005 R6.
the same model that we have here, no mod's, just standard.

i guess i would be up for some sort of importing fee.
i take it i would need a compliance thingo,

any help (with estimated prices) would be appreciated.

    thanks all.
  2. G'day,
The short answer is u cant do it. The long answer is, u will need to comply it. That can make the cost more than the bike is worth. The only exceptions to this are if the bike is 15yrs or older, or if ur mate has owned the bike overseas and is returning to oz, but then u would have to register it in his name. Check :- www.dotars.gov.au/transreg/str_imp-cert.aspx

If anyone knows any different I would certainly like to know myself.

    Good Luck,
  3. What about a SEV's equivalent to bikes? is there any such thing?
  4. I think there is an exemption for "specialist vehicles" but that's really only applicable to custom builds or limited production models - you have to apply to have the vehicle accepted. Really don't think an R6, even if it's modified, would be accepted for the simple fact that there's already plenty out here.
  5. That sucks cos you can get some killer deals on bikes out of Japan and the US :(
  6. ya, just found out last week that I can't import my own bike when I move there next month as I haven't owned it for more than 12 months. I've ONLY had it for 9 months when I bought it new. So I've gotta sell it and buy another one. Real bummer!

Custom's pretty strict abt vehicle importing.

On the up side... I get to buy aa new bike soon!
