I Am Green As

  1. G'day.

    I decided last Thursday that my next solution to my travel-to-work problem, after a mix of public transport, an electric bicycle and my car, would be a motorcycle. I talked my partner into it and rang up on Friday and booked into a DECA course on Saturday. I spent a ridiculous number of hours over the weekend and beginning of the working week doing internet research. I had a look at a few used bikes on Sunday (private) and Wednesday (dealer - I pissed off early from work). Yesterday morning I rang a Suzuki dealer and ordered a GS500F which I picked up yesterday afternoon.

    Considering the prices of used LAMS bikes, for me a new ride was a bit of a no-brainer in the end. I am totally unconfident in my ability to pick a good private machine which leaves a used dealer and coming from the perspective of the car market, they are way overpriced in my totally uneducated opinion. I looked at a BMW F650 - a 1995 model. This is a 17 year old motorcycle that cost 10.5K then. They wanted $6600.

    I got the GS for $6990 brand spanking new. 2 year warranty, and a level of service when I picked the bike up that I am sure would not have been nearly matched by the used dealer.

    My experience on a motorbike is limited to the course on Saturday, and a total of about ten hours in the saddles of shitty dirt bikes on mates' farms when I was a teenager, fifteen years ago. The first thing I did on my new bike was stall it! (I wonder what the stats are on that...) The clutch feels nice to me though, and I've only stalled it once since. The front brake also feels MUCH nicer than the one on the training bike, and I find myself much more inclined to use it. It probably doesn't hurt that I'm going faster than thirty now.

    Obviously I have nothing much to compare it to, but so far I really like my bike. I have to keep it under 5500rpm for the first 800km, so it's good that it is perfectly fine with being in top gear all the way from 80 to 110 which is as fast as I've gone so far. I am glad that it is never going to give me power I'm not expecting and can't handle.

    I will be doing a 130 km each way commute five days a week. So far I've done two trips out and one in - 400kms to date. The first service isn't far away already. I'm feeling much more confident but definitely not over-confident by a long shot. It seems like it might be a good way to learn - a repeated journey over very familiar roads with the majority of the voyage on the freeway at a fairly even speed. My bum is sore by the end of the trip but I'm told it will harden up a bit. My wrist hurt last night but it doesn't tonight.

    Some of the research I did was right here on this forum so I want to say thanks to everyone for all the wisdom. I'm loving the language of motorcycling - cagers, SMIDSY, etc. I will continue to absorb as much info as I can from you all as I attempt to become less noobish at as fast a rate as possible.

  5. Cheers mate. Yeah the drive away price on the new GS was almost too good to be true. Best of all, the ad (and price) on bikepoint led me to Byrners Suzuki in Seaford where I was extremely happy with the treatment. Gary is a legend.
  6. Welcome to NR :) If you went to Seaford, I assume you're in Vic. Come down and check out the Saturday morning practice sessions. Great place to pick up skills and techniques, and to meet lots of other riders. Depending on where you live, it's likely that someone is coming from your area and can escort you in if you like.
  7. the LAMS scheme is keeping the price of used 500s/250s and other qualifying bikes artifically high. on that basis you might as well have a new one with the comfort of knowing that in a couple of years you can probably sell it for an artifically high price :LOL:
  8. welcome to NR and as Minglis said, rock up to sat morn prac sessions, a few guys ride in from beyond your area so a hook up can be easily arranged..
    congrats on gettin a new bike too, heaps on info on here but first hand exp on sat morns can save your life!! enjoy and keep smiling

    I rode out to Tarra Bulga this afternoon, on the way to which there are some 'twisties'. Oh my god, even putt-putting along like I am at the moment, they are so much FUN :)

  11. sounds like we've got a good one here, folks.
    a warm hearted welcome to you my good man. do you know what oil you are using in your bike? you should be using a petroleum based oil for the run-in period, after that use what you like as long as it's rated correctly for your motorcycle and has no friction modifiers, check your manual for details. being a suzuki like mine it will probably tell you to use either JASO MA or a oil of a rating of certain types which I'm sure varies between engines. meaning you can put automotive oil in it and not screw your warranty, assuming that changing the oil yourself doesn't void the warranty.
  12. At the moment it has whatever the dealer's mechanic put in predelivery. I checked the level this afternoon (500kms) and it's closer to full than empty. I think I'll just let them put whatever they want in it at 1000kms. It requires 10W-40, which is what the Castrol Magnatec I put in my car is, but I'm guessing it has friction modifiers? At any rate I will be leaving these decisions to the experts at this stage.

  15. close to the full mark is OK but ideally you want it to fall in between the full and empty marks while the bike is being held vertical after the bike has been run for a while, turned off and left for a couple of minutes for the oil to settle.
    don't put castrol magnatec in, they specifically state on their website that it's not recommended for motorcycles. sure would love to see a castrol magnatec for bikes though

  18. Congrats, but am I missing something? I have considered a bike for a long commute and I couldn't justify it.

    You're doing 1,300km/week?
    62,400km/year (48w)

    That's 10 services a year. 8-12 sets of wheels, depends how sticky you go. As you've already mentioned, it's tough to sell a used lams.

    So what am I missing here?
  19. Not sure how he'd need 8-12 sets of tyres? Maybe 4-5.

    Just curious, what did you go with? How was it better than commuting on a bike?
  20. 1. Yeah 1250 kms a week - but not for a whole year. In about 6 months time we'll be moving into Melbourne and I'll be closer to work. The plan is for about the end of daylight savings - I don't want to have leave in the dark and get home again in the dark like I did last winter.

    2. I don't think it's hard to sell a LAMS bike. Based on the prices being asked, it must be stupidly easy to sell a LAMS bike.

    3. Surely tyre wear must be influenced by rider style. My BMW 318ti has had a single set of tyres put on it in the 120,000 kms I have put on it - two at a time, 100K kms ago and about 60K kms ago. One set of brake pads over the same period. Clearly bikes go through rubber quicker - but so do most cars, right?

    4. I was on the train, that's $75 for a weekly ticket, and then I had to get from the suburban train station to work - I got lifts, I used an electric bicycle, I walked. I had to get up at 5 and got home at 7. If the trains were running late, it was later. It gave me the shits.

    5. I started driving, it cost about $140 a week in fuel, and then there was the awesome experience of the Monash carpark. The last two days I drove, Monday and Tuesday of last week a journey that should take 1 hour 20-30 mins took 2 hours 5-10 mins - and I was late for work. Cars also experience wear and tear.

    6. The bike is the most economical, least stressful, most enjoyable form of transport by a margin. And my sanity was on the line ;)
