how much for new rings

Discussion in 'Maintenance and Servicing' started by wilhelmshock, Apr 10, 2012.

  1. looking at buying a VTR250, but it needs a fair bit of work done, at least new rings, possible a tune on the front shocks and some exhaust piping, any idea how much this all would cost?

  2. Why would you buy a bike that needs to be gutted before you can ride it?
You know that rings won't be the end of it, right?
  3. Yeah if it's worn down to the point that the engine needs a rebuild then the rest of the bike is sure to follow.
  4. yeah, fair enough.

I think i'll steer clear of that one then
  5. I agree.

If it needs rings, then it needs pistons.. then maybe cylinder head work, and valve train, then bottom end.. and then there is the drive train.. .
  6. Why do you suspect it needs rings?
  7. well, there was some blue smoke coming out the exhaust when we took it for a test ride, and a friend of mine who knows a lot more about mechanics told me that meant it needed new rings.
  8. if it hasn't been looked after... more like a whole two new slugs and probably sleeves. $$
  9. thanks for the advice guys, decided against it
