About the explanation to parents ... I hope you are in a position some day to experience their concerns .. but anyway ... try this attack
Mum/Dad I'm going to enlist in an advance road rider training when I save up oh here's a good idea, I've got a birthday coming up - get the hint Benj?? Howzabout all the bits and pieces they can buy you for future birthdays??? Especially the safety gear stuff!
Good Luck (with the parents that is) and ride safe always. I'm 50+ and always enjoy throwing my leg over (the bike, the bike!!!).
