Helmet Survey

Discussion in 'Riding Gear and Bike Accessories/Parts' at netrider.net.au started by ibast, Oct 19, 2007.

  1. Ok guys buying a Helmet is a PIA. They are dear and they are critical to your wellbeing, but you never really know what they are like until you have one for a couple of weeks.

So I propose we rate out helmets so that others may benefit from our wisdom. I have proposed a 1-5 scoring system (see below) where 1 is worst, 5 is best and 3 is average. Remember people scoring everything 5 or 1 helps nobody and keep 3 in mind as the average.

give a score (1-5) in each of the following areas:

External finish (is the shell made well)
Internal finish (is the lining nice)
    External appearance (is it ugly)
Fit (how does it sit on your head)
Lining removable/washable (1 for not at all, 3 for partial, 5 for fully removable and washable)
    Quietness (obvious)
    Hot ventilation
Cold Ventilation (does it fog up in winter)
    Visor operation/removal/availability
Value for money (include purchase price in brackets)

Have you ever crashed with one? If yes, tell us about how it went.

So by way of example my Shoie TZR would be:

    External finish: 4
    Internal finish: 2
    External appearance: 2
    Fit: 3
    Lining removable/washable: 2
    Quietness: 2
    Hot ventilation: 2
    Cold Ventilation: 1
    Visor operation/removal/availability: 2
    Value for money: 2 ($550)
    Total: 22/50

Have you ever crashed with one? No.

Keep to the rules and this should be a pretty handy tool.

  2. NEX brand helmet (not sure of model but it was a full-face fibreglass shell)

External finish: 2 (plastic vents a bit cheapo)
Internal finish: 4 (vinyl on base of helmet cracked but padding was real comfy)
    External appearance: 3
    Fit: 4
    Lining removable/washable: 5
    Quietness: 1
    Hot ventilation: 1
    Cold Ventilation: 2
Visor operation/removal/availability: 1 (easy to use, impossible to find)
    Value for money: 4 ($300)
    Total: 26

Crash tested? Yep. Took a 100kph impact with only a few chips in the shell - kept me alive and conscious. Would have bought another one but couldn't find anyone who stocks them. Will review the replacement Nolan once it's been "run in".

  5. Shoei XR1000

External finish (3) Matte black with a coating which is coming off in places where I have scuffed it
    Internal finish (5)
External appearance (4) Fooli sic bro!
    Fit (5) Like a glove
Lining removable/washable (3) only cheek pads
Quietness (3) could be better, but I like to wear ear plugs anyways
    Hot ventilation (4) good
Cold Ventilation (3) yet to hear of one that doesn't fog
Visor operation/removal/availability (4) Often between clear and tinted, no issues yet. also has adjustable mechanism to tighten/loosen visor
Value for money (4) More than I expected, but don't have experience with other helmets. I'd happily pay $500 for another one.
    (38/50)
Have you ever crashed with one? If yes, tell us about how it went.
Yes, but it barely touched the ground. so can't comment on it's impact resilience.

EDIT: 2nd time I stacked with it only the visor got scratched. no marks on the shell.

  11. Just a note, fit is a subjective thing... different heads for different helmets.
    Also... WEIGHT. Important one.

    Two helmets: M2R X3 / M2R X2

MX helmets just for reference, hence the 0 for visor and 5 for ventilation..

    Weight: 1200-1300g
    External finish: 5/4
    Internal finish: 5/4
    External appearance: 4/4
    Fit: NA
    Lining removable/washable: 5/5
    Quietness: 2/2
    Hot ventilation: 5/5
    Cold Ventilation: 5/5
    Visor operation/removal/availability: 0/0
    Value for money: $500/$350

Have you ever crashed with one? Crashed a bunch of times with the X2. I got it on sale, so being cheap I of course didnt hit my head with it on for ages. I've since destroyed it with a decent crash and did it's thing. I also face planted in it and the chin piece held up well, which is reassuring.

Havent crashed with the X3 yet. Being expensive, I no doubt will soon write it off.

  12. AGV Stealth rrp$399

External finish (is the shell made well) 4
Internal finish (is the lining nice) 3 lining is nice, but comes apart in places
External appearance (is it ugly) 4
Fit (how does it sit on your head) 4 fits ME well.
Lining removable/washable (1 for not at all, 3 for partial, 5 for fully removable and washable) 5
    Quietness (obvious) 2
Hot ventilation 2 gets pretty warm
Cold Ventilation (does it fog up in winter) 4 never fogged up that I couldn't see
Visor operation/removal/availability 4 once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy.
Value for money (include purchase price in brackets) 4 given that I've had pushy helmets worth this much, I think it is a good helmet for the money. But I will be spending more on a new helmet soon.

Have you ever crashed with one? If yes, tell us about how it went. NO, (looking for wood to touch!)

  13. Shoei TZR

Have you ever crashed with one? yes. the visor still intact (hit right side of head), while i only copped a bruised right eye and short term memory loss. i am amazed by its toughness. i am yet to find my helmet to inspect further dmg on it. probably post a picture!

  14. IMHO if the fit isn't 5, then you have bought the wrong helmet.
I never buy, unless it its perfectly...and I try all brands..and prices.

  15. Well my TRZ was the equal best I could find in my budget, but I wouldn't say it was brilliantly comfortable. I wouldn't even say it was good. Just acceptable. Hence 3/5.

  16. Hey Dougz, just wondering where did you buy that Arai helmet or yours? Sounds cheaper compared to the prices I've seen online (motorcycle accessories websites in Australia are selling the Arai Vector for around $550-$650 (can't remember), solid colours and graphics are the same price).

I'm only going helmet hunting after my assignments due next week and gonna check out Peter Stevens in CBD and RedWing Honda in Heidelberg, very useful thread anyhow :)
