HD gets a clue!

  1. From the Kneeslider on the new XR1200X:

    Did you hear that? FULLY ADJUSTABLE SUSPENSION! Surely the first HD in the world with such Marvels? HD have caught up to the 1980's!



    The XR would be the only HD I would ever consider, the only catch is, how much is this new fangled adjustablilty going to cost?

  4. One thing I have been noting lately is the Japanese have been moving away from fully adjustable on all but their sports bikes. So from a suspension point of view that makes this bike ahead of most Jap bikes.

  5. Perhaps thats to prevent inexperienced people from messing with the perfectly tuned suspension.

  6. Hmm, looking at the tail end of the bike, seems they may be considering some front fairings next!
    Oh and another thing, I'd like a bigger than 13 liter fuel tank for a 1200....
    Probably will have to stop for fuel as often as the Yamaha Vmax 1700 at 15 liters...
    Which is often!!!!!

  7. Nah despite harleys being old low tech, the one area they can can better a same sized jap engine is on fuel economy

    Odd that isn't it, last thing you'd thing Americans would be interested in is economy


    That said who buys a bike over another cos they save 1L/100km

  8. That's not so much the issue, though, as range: in Australia it's a PITA, or even dangerous, to have a bike that can't go a few hundred km between drinks...

  9. And understandably so. Fully adjustable suspension is wasted or downright dangerous in hands of most riders - on the other hand it is now possible to build suspension that works quite well in real life situations with only minimal adjustment.

    I see an analogy to the world of computing... in the world of Linux, a few years ago it was fashionable to use 'source based distributions'. Instead of getting a ready-made system you'd download the source code, then compile the system with exactly compiler flags and options you wanted, compile your kernel with exactly the modules needed for your hardware.... Does it work? Oh yes, it does. You can tweak and massage and compile your system for days, and at the end of it all, if you knew what you were doing, you'd be rewarded with a lean and mean system that would boot and perform most operations 0.0005 seconds faster than off-the shelf system like Ubuntu.

    The thing is... who cares? Being able to roll your own system is really, really useful for a tiny minority with very specialised needs, but it's a complete overkill for the majority of the users.

    The same goes for your FULLY ADJUSTABLE SUSPENSION.

  10. Except that suspension tuning depends heavily on rider weight, riding style, road/track surface which all obviously varies greatly from rider to rider, bike to bike, and therefore suspension cannot be perfectly tuned from the factory.

    That said, other than rear preload I agree that the range and scope of adjustment available today is unnecessary for at least 90% of riders, 90% of the time.

  11. I thought the XLH1200 Sports from the 90's had adjustable suspension? The one with the twin discs...

  12. Test rode one back to back with a Thruxton over a 25km course - both good bikes - didn;t go much above 3rd the whole way - bth went welll, even on the highway

    Really liked the narrower bars of the Thuruxton, but everything else went the HD's way

  13. The bike is a factory version of the flat tracker. Quite a popular and I must say desirable way to go with sportsters.

    So I don't think they will be adding a fairing and that explains the stupid tank sizing.

    Tend to agree with too much emphasis being put on complex adjustable suspension.

    It is not uncommon for builders to get Sportsters down around 200kg when building a flat trackers. So I do wonder about the last 30-40kg on this thing.

  14. I'm sorry, bit I don't follow your computer analogy, despite having just loaded Ubuntu onto one of my PC's... Can you describe how it handles better in the corners? Surely having fully adjustable suspension on your PC would help, all the nerds I've seen are either really skinny or really fat...

    On a more serious note though, have you ever had a bike set up for your weight & riding style? I have & it makes a huge difference. One size does not fit all.

    Of course, it would if you were in the average weight range, but even then, riding style would also have an effect.

    So have you?

  15. i gotta say adjustable suspension is a bit of a wank for road riding imo.....sure maybe you need to get it tweaked when you buy the bike (if you are large or small build) but really how often do people change these settings....fark i rode mine straight out of the show room with whatever settings it had, done 70k with it, only changing oil weight once, and still never touched a single setting, and yes i do punt it along at a reasonable pace.....

  16. after hiring a Softail Classic back in 07, i was impressed with some of the technology of HD.
    automatically cancelling indicators were a nice touch. the only other bike i know that has it is the new S1000RR (though I'm sure there's more, possibly in the sports tourer range)
