Hairline crack in exhaust header...

Discussion in 'Technical and Troubleshooting Torque' started by MdMa, Dec 22, 2009.

  1. Hey guys,

I am just about to buy my first bike... CBR250 RR

I checked out a bike on the weekend and everything was great except for a hairline crack in the exhaust header.

The guy has wrapped it with what seems to be foil and a wire of some sort.
It wasn't very big in length maybe 5cm, running vertically.

Is this sort of thing repairable or would I need to replace the part?
    Is this common?

Here is a pic to indicate where the crack (green line) is... obviously it is not a CBR250 exhaust.

  2. It could be repairable, depending on the thickness & state of the metal...

I would take it to a car exhaust place & see if the can do a quick weld for you. I say car exhaust place rather than bike cos it will probably be cheaper, them not knowing how stupidly expensive bike exhausts are. Do you have any mates with a welder?

If not, try findapart.com & see how much it will cost to replace.
  3. Well, I haven't bought the bike yet, but at least its good to know it might be repairable.

Thanks for the link.. I did also email a few wreckers today; a couple got back to me... $350
  4. +1 to what MV said.
