Gear shift pedal can be pulled outwards, then doesn't work

Discussion in 'Technical and Troubleshooting Torque' started by rdkls, May 27, 2009.

  1. Friend had a low-level stack a few days ago which bent the gear shift pedal in. Bent it out no probs, may or may not be related.
Noticed he can pull the spindle it's on out away from the bike about 1cm
After doing so, moving the pedal doesn't shift.
Push it back in and all good.
    Is this normal? Any advice?

  2. Not normal. You need a gearbox repair.
  3. +1

It sounds like you've punched the shaft in further than it's supposed to go, or perhaps even broken the actuators that are attached to it. Doesn't sound cheap, either way :(.
  4. I've got a photocopied PDF of the VTR250 workshop manual if you need it. Section 10 shows the gear shifter components and how it goes together. You may be able to work out what could be wrong and decide if you want to take the job on yourself.

  5. Thanks very much for the offer Whitey.
I've got the manual plus some nice tools so will have a crack and post back
