Fzx750 modernisation

Discussion in 'Modifications and Projects' at netrider.net.au started by hopeless, Dec 10, 2015.

  1. So my plans are to modify my Daily ride a 1988 YamahaFZX750. I really like the look and overall feel but I find the brakes a bit shit, the rear end a bit loose and sloppy and the front a bit soft. This will be a long process as finances and time off bike
    is available.;)

So I have started gathering parts.

The front end will be getting a 1998 YZF600 replacement. Its a direct bolt on. This arrived today

    20151210_161257_zps1mxws7j9.
    20151210_161300_zpsvolc6f9t.
    Much cleaning to do

Rear end from a pre 2004 XJR1300 with new progressive shocks.
Have had this a few weeks, cleaned all the crud off it. Need a brake caliper and bracket with torque bar and wheel

starting point for Bike is here

I thought I was just buying the Wheel and brakes But the guy sent me the whole rear end. I now have 2 xjr1300 swingarms if anyone needs one ;)

wheel has a brand new Michelin Pilot Power on it. still has the little rubber spikes!!

Thats most of the parts I needed to purchase. I now need to fabricate some brackets etc. so a bit more time before any real action!!

Oh and my Ikon springs came on Monday too :p

  3. Does anyone know where i might get a new pair of Riser bushes for the FZR1000 yoke I just picked up. Not in a rush as I've still got lots to do before then. They look solid enough but I reckon I might as well replace the 20 odd yr old rubber in it.

  4. Started resizing the swingarm sleeve. I had to take 3.5mm off each end, with a soft flappy disc on the 5" grinder and file, all done. Priced some swingarm Bearings, proper genuine Yamaha ones are $64 each. Statewide bearings are $13 each. Thats for the same Brand!!! Bloody gougin bastards :grumpy:

Surprisingly little blood or swearing. But its out

    New compared to old

    20151230_180923_zpsdyxck0gr.

Had to use the original spindle shaft and bolt. They are the same size at bearing but spindle bolt from the XJR would require drilling the frame. Not set up to do that properly.

So today I have to get some bolts for the bottom of the shocks, a new chain and some washers to spread the mufflers slightly.

  6. This morning was just a tidy up really. I thought the brakes and chain would be ok, but both are too short. No car till after tea so won't get into a bike shop, looks like she sits till after new year

  7. Well, with a bit of emery tape and some elbow grease I got the old chain joiner to fit the newer chain. I went looking for a brake hose to no avail. But then I spied the thundercat front end in the corner and realised the hoses were plenty long enough so I fitted one to use until HEL opens again.

So I have gone from this

    to this

    20160102_104714_zpsqdgeucsk.
    So its done.

just got back from a test ride. The rear end feels so much stiffer and stronger. I couldn't be happier with the Ikon shockies. I was a bit worried that I went too cheap but they are extremely good and exactly what I asked for. Bike feels more connected to the road now somehow. Brakes are giving me a little grief but I'll keep bleeding them. rarely use the back anyway:whistle:

will go for a proper ride next week and get a bit silly and see how it goes
