fuel pump

Discussion in 'Technical and Troubleshooting Torque' at netrider.net.au started by _joel_, Nov 4, 2006.

  1. ok, i have a fuel pump issue.
when running it is making a "tick, tick, tick, tick" noise.
since the noise came about i have experienced rough idling, a little hesitaion in take-off but no real loss of power and when i gas it, it seems to accelerate smoothly.

i isolated the noise to the solenoid actuator on the pump itself, and seems to be actually sparking at the actuator. this makes me nervous as this is an area where fuel is

i have replaced the relay, re-soldered the solenoid contacts on the pump itself and done everything in my ability to make the bastard work proper.

my question is, is this ticking noise a indication that my fuel pump is close to death?
i took it for a spin today by-passing the pump and under vacuum alone it seemed to run ok, but dunno if it will have an adverse effect on my motor.

i really wanna do the coast run tomorrow, so any help would bw appreciated

  3. Most fuel pumps make a tick noise, some make a whirr noise.
You usually only hear it when you turn the bike on but haven't
    started it yet.

Disconnect the pump out line and put it into a jerry can, then turn on
the pump and see if it gives a good steady flow of fuel into the can.
That will tell you if the pump pumps properly.

Fuel pumps aren't too expensive at the wreckers.
