Fostering Long Term Thinking

Discussion in 'The Pub' at netrider.net.au started by cjvfr, Aug 10, 2013.

  1. Thinking, especially in politics, has become very short term. To counter this a foundation the Long Now Foundation tries to foster longer term goals and plans. The foundation uses the 5 digit year so as to avoid the Decacentenial Bug which will occur in 8000 years.

One of their major projects is the 10,000 year clock.

    Its design has these goals

With occasional maintenance, the clock should reasonably be expected to display the correct time for the next 10,000 years.

The clock should be maintainable with bronze-age technology.

It should be possible to determine operational principles of the clock by close inspection.

It should be possible to improve the clock with time.

It should be possible to build working models of the clock from table-top to monumental size using the same design.

The clock is totally mechanical, wound by human power, chimes each day of its 10,000 year life with a different sequence of chimes. Under construction now.
