fork seal replacement troubles on a gpx

Discussion in 'Technical and Troubleshooting Torque' started by dm, Dec 6, 2008.

  1. hey guys,
im in the process of replacing the fork seals in my gpx. all was going well till i had to take the stanchion apart from the fork leg to get the old seal out. all the places on the net ive seen have said just to sliding hammer them, and ive tried this, but to no end.
    anyone have any tips?

  2. Have you removed the allen key bolt from the lower end ? Sometimes you have to dig the crap out to even see this bolt. :)

I've never used a slide hammer in my life to get a set of forks apart
  3. yep allen bolt for the damper is gone
im not using a slide hammer in the actual sense, only the technique of sliding the stanchion away from the fork leg to try to separate them.
  4. have you removed the retaining spring/c-clip at the top of the fork leg.
  5. yep did all that, eventually got it off with two people pulling on it, hopefully dont have to do that again for a while.
  6. It's not an "Allen Key Bolt", Bob. It's a "Hex Head Socket Screw"
  7. Good to hear you know something about a screw MVrog.
