Forced Induction

  1. For anyone who has an interest in the topic, this is probably the best semi-technical summary of what's out there. Covers superchargers and turbochargers and developments of both, down to the latest in zero-lag turbo systems for v8 applications.

  8. Hell yeah. I'd much rather have a supercharged VFR than a turbocharged one.
  9. Interesting read, although it does omit to mention anything about the Miller cycle engine used by Mazda. To save people searching that's the one in which the intake valve was left open longer than normal during compression, with the enginer relying instead on the compression of a supercharger (with an intercooler allowing more charge than normal to be stuffed into the engine).

    It's something manufacturers are having another look at for use with hybrids, as it works particularly well with fixed speed engines (it is already used in things like trains and stationary generators).
  10. Yeah, I <3 supercharging. Having owned naturally aspirated, supercharged and turbocharged, FWD, RWD and AWD, I gotta say: supercharged RWD all the way, from a driving/riding pleasure standpoint.
  11. Meh, superchargers are for people who can only 'point and shoot'. Turbos are for people who like to think.
  12. By "think", you mean, "has the guts to mash the accelerator in a blind corner, two seconds before the power is actually desired", right? :D

    I understand the thrill of the peaky power delivery and it is kinda fun, but I take greater pleasure out of having a car which responds to my inputs with some proper finesse. My MR2's set up with very neutral handling, so minor changes in throttle position direct the car almost as much as the steering wheel.

    Horses for courses, I suppose. :)
  13. Meh, all forced induction is just a cheap alternative to using more cylinders and higher revs.

    This is why bike engines are so much better than a turbo Jap import or supercharged V8, but not as good as a decent V12 at high revs (especially an Italian V12) :p.

  15. It's a horses for courses thing really. Turbocharging can be more economical on fuel than super. But it runs pretty hot, and heat is a quick death.
    That Ford 4.0 turbo ed can haul ass against some serious V8's.
    A guy in my area put a turbo on his Hayabusa motor. But it's in a Super Sport...car..meh track weapon. Looks like a Chapman a bit. Think it was running 600hp @ 22psi. In something that weight around 600kg. Now that's a car I'd like to drive...
  16. Nah, that's just four turbo Jap imports with only four wheels. :p

    The BRM V16 is a much better choice if you must have that many cylinders :).
  17. Blown motors suffer the same fate, in fact the charged air out of a blower is quite often hotter than that out of a turbo. In fact experienced it only a couple days ago, 34 degree day towing a jet ski and it was pretty doughy.

    I currently drive a blown V8, 270rwk. Previously had a turbo 6 and 240rwkw, the six was far more 'fun' to drive.
    We've also had turbo chraged rotaries in the house over the years. 240rwkw, sub 1000kg and zero electronic aids, yeah you know you're driving.

    Blowers are boring, too linear there is no excitment driving them. Tubro's you have to think about driving, think when to roll on the throttle etc.

  20. Superchargers are of particular interest to me. I now understand that the roots-type superchargers have the advantage of providing extra low rpm torque, while they are not as efficient at higher rpm, which should translate to higher engine life. This would be very suitable for a small pickup truck (ute) such as a Hilux. Of particular interest is the Eaton TVS supercharger system due to its highly efficient design, and indeed someone has gone to the trouble to fit this to their 2WD hilux: http://www.lextreme.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10554
    Unfortunately they are about 6 grand plus all the other bits to make it work:
    However if one managed to find a very nice condition 22R (or whatever engine this is going on, haven't read the whole thread yet) for a very low price, or perhaps get a running hilux and rebuild a worn out engine, fit the supercharger to it, drop it in and sell the other engine, this could be quite a viable option for someone running like a mobile mechanic or concreting business.
