    Date: Saturday 8 February 2014
    Start: either 7.15am at M4 McDonald's citybound (http://goo.gl/maps/lIRbM) or 8.15am at McDonald's Heathcote (http://goo.gl/maps/RJ6pw)
Route: Scarborough Hotel via Royal National Park (http://goo.gl/maps/zXKlO)
Distance: 196km / 3 hrs 5 mins riding time (plus stops)
Who: All are welcome - learners included - but no idiots please.

Folks, I've decided it's time to get my Saturday morning rides going again. I've moved them to the second Saturday from now on, instead of the third, and I'm also going to try to emphasise the early starts aspect, so from now on I'm going to call them the "Second Saturday Sunrise Sessions." We won't necessarily be starting at sunrise of course, but I guess I just like the sound of the S's.

Another change is that from now on I'm organising these rides on behalf of the Christian social riders' group I lead. This definitely doesn't mean you will be "Bible-bashed" if you come along (anyone who knows me will know that's not what I'm about) - we're just out for a ride, and we like company. PM me if you'd like more info about our group.

The first ride for 2014 will be on Saturday 8 February, and we're heading back to Scarborough Hotel for brunch via the Royal National Park. A map can be viewed here: http://goo.gl/maps/zXKlO

    This is the plan:

    7.15am sharp - depart M4 McDonald's citybound (http://goo.gl/maps/lIRbM)
    - take the Silverwater Rd exit and turn right
    - left at Olympic Dr
    - left at Heathcote Rd

    8.00am - arrive at McDonalds Heathcote (http://goo.gl/maps/RJ6pw)

8.15am sharp - Leave McDonalds Heathcote and turn right to head north on Princes Hwy
    - turn right to enter Royal National Park at Farnell Ave

    9.15am - arrive at Scarborough Hotel (http://goo.gl/maps/WDlgQ)

10.00am - depart Scarborough Hotel and head back up through Royal National Park

This is where the supervised ride ends. I'll be heading back to Eastern Creek via Heathcote Rd and the M5 & M7, and all are welcome to join me, but I expect most of the rest of the group will disperse at this point. I expect to arrive back at Eastern Creek at approx 11.30am.

NOTE: Please ensure you have a full tank when you start the ride. The ride is a 196km return trip back to Eastern Creek, which should be well-doable for most bikes.

We'll use corner markers and a TEC for this ride. This is the way it's going to work:
    1. The person riding behind the leader is automatically the corner marker.
    2. At an intersection, the leader will hold out his left hand and point to the side of the road, to let the corner marker know it's time to pull over.
    3. The corner marker pulls over as directed, with their indicator on in the direction of the turn.
    4. All riders pass the corner marker and proceed in the direction indicated.
    5. When the last rider - the "Tail End Charlie" (TEC) - passes the corner marker, the TEC gives the corner marker a big wave to let them know there's no-one else coming.
    5. The corner marker is now the new TEC.

It is the leader's responsibility to ensure he doesn't lose sight of the corner marker in his mirrors, otherwise the corner marker will become lost and so will everyone else. It's the TEC's responsibility to make sure the corner marker knows they're the TEC. It's everyone else's responsibility to ensure they don't wave at the corner marker unless they're the TEC!

Please make sure you understand the above before coming on this ride. Don't be afraid to post in this thread if there's any part you don't understand. If you come along you will need to know how it works.

As usual, if the weather is uncertain, I will make the call by 6am and post here to say whether or not the ride is going ahead.

Who is in? As always, suggested changes to the route are always welcome.

When replying, please state whether you'll be starting at Eastern Creek at 7.15am or at Heathcote at 8.15am. Please also make sure you're there early so that we can get going without delay.

  6. Fin / Yoshi - are you both still in, and if so, where are you two planning to join the ride? Eastern Creek, Silverwater or Heathcote?

Two or three other riders are meeting us at the first driveway on the left after Silverwater Rd crosses Parramatta Rd - long turning lane, should be a safe place to pick up extras. Might be convenient for one or both of you?

Looks like potentially 15 all up:

Eastern Creek - Gareth, Michael M, Damir, Joel
Silverwater Rd - Wil, Michael P, Lisa
    Heathcote - Karen, Michael N
Maybe - Fin, Yoshi, Dennis, Doddles, Mindy, Martin

    Should be fun!
  8. Hi Gareth,
I'll be riding with Womble tomorrow. He doesn't like to get up too early (or some excuse about living on an island...)!
So we'll be a bit behind your departure time.
We may meet you on the road as you come back up through the park.
We'll probably be coming in the north end of the park about 10am.

    Have fun and stay safe!
