State of shame ... Family violence rose 40 per cent in a year in Victoria.

The Victorian crime rate has increased again, with police saying that surging family violence offences are the reason for the rise.

Family violence offences increased by almost 40 per cent in the past year, police said when the figures were released on Thursday morning.

Crimes against the person increased by 11 per cent from January to December 2011 compared to 2012, while drug offences leapt by 17 per cent.

The rate of offending per 100,000 people across all crime categories increased by almost 8 per cent.

Other crime offences, which include public order offences and breaching of court orders, increased by 21 per cent.

There has been an increase in the crime rate for each of the past 12 months, although 2011-12 was the first year since 2000-01 when the annual crime rate increased.

Assault offences recorded the largest increased of any selected crime, with a jump of 15 per cent.
Burglary (other) offences, which do not include residential burglaries, increased almost 10 per cent, while theft of motor vehicle offences increased 9 per cent. Robbery and property damage offences both fell.

Acting Chief Commissioner Lucinda Nolan said family violence reporting had driven up the overall crime rate for the past 18 months. The rate of family violence-related crime had increased 39.7 per cent.

Ms Nolan said the increase in crime rate was also due to more detected drug offences and behaviour in public offences, and a rise in non-family violence related assaults, which were up 4.7 per cent.

  2. This is the sad truth. Keep hitting road users while real crime sky rockets.

What an epic fail across the board including the 20% increase in motorist fatalities.
