Does anyone know how to prepare chromed plastic 4 repainting

Discussion in 'Bling and Appearance' at netrider.net.au started by Darklord, Jan 31, 2009.

  1. Hi,

My bike has quite a lot of the chromed plastic on it (too much for my liking) & I want to re-spray some of it black.

My question is does anyone know how to do this?

Do I have to start by roughing up the surface with steel wool or is an etching primer sufficient?

Any assitance would be greatly appreciated.

  2. Doubt a primer would stick to a shiny chrome finish, roughing it up with steel wool probably wouldn't provide a very good surface either.

Personally, I'd be wet sanding all the chrome back with something like 600 or 800 grit paper first.
  3. Only guessing here, but you may be able to get the chrome chemically stripped. Shouldn't hurt the plastic. I would ask the companies that re chrome plastic if they can do it for you.
  4. just sand it with 400-600 wet
  5. Yep, that should work, then a good wipe with a prepsol soaked rag.
