In just under 120 years the motorcycle has won Australians' hearts and found its way into the sporting and recreational fabric of the country. First appearing on Melbourne roads in the late 1890s, the motorcycle has evolved from a practical and efficient transport option to a liberating force, an icon, and a ubiquitous part of the Yarra Ranges landscape.
This summer, a new exhibition at Yarra Ranges Regional Museum explores what is behind our love affair with the motorcycle—where it came from, what has shaped it over time, and what it is about Yarra Ranges that captures the essence of Australia’s love for riding.
Curated in conjunction with local riders and featuring a range of vintage memorabilia, classic bikes and personal stories, RIDE showcases the world of aesthetics, mythology, fashion and symbolism that surrounds motorcycles and their riders.
