There was a similar sort of thing when i was at calder park about a month ago, a jet powered old holden shuttle van, a mazda rx7 and a holden crewman. Pretty cool to look at and a bit of a novelty but i don't think they were super fast down the track...

That's because jets are a bit crap at low speeds. It's a few years since I saw the maths of it, but at ground bound, standing start speeds, you're far better off taking the drive off mechanically than using thrust to propel your vehicle.
