changing oil - how much?

Discussion in 'Bling and Appearance' started by jono454, Feb 14, 2009.

  1. im changing the oil on my honda '88 vt250 for the first time. i have no idea how much oil the engine takes...

    how do i find out?
  2. Look in the owners manual. Beg borrow or steal one if you do not have it :) Amazing what you can find out about your bike in the owners manual :)
  3. haven't got access to an owner's manual :(
  4. Service manual for VT250F lists oil capacity as 2.5L (Disassembled)
  5. Capacity is probably stamped on the engine case somewhere near the filler.
  6. Worse comes to worse, fill it to the line on the window.
  7. hmm, since the bike was imported the stamp is in an asian language... although there are three figures... 2.5, 2 and 1.8.

obviously 2.5 is dissassembled, any idea what the other two would be? im guessing with/without a new filter?
  8. 1.8 will be for change oil only.
2 will be for change oil and filter.

Regardless, use your dipstick/sight window for confirmation of correct oil level.
  9. 2.5 is how many litres of oil it needs.
2 is how many hours it takes a noob to do the job.
1.8 is the amount of oil you will pour through the engine before you realise you didn't put the drain plug back in.
