Buying a bike from a dealer - what is your experience?

Discussion in 'Businesses and Service Providers' started by jayray, Oct 20, 2008.

  1. Im looking at buying either a new or used bike from a Melbourne dealer. Do dealers provide reasonable discounts off the advertised prices? Is it worth haggling for a better deal?

  2. With new it depends on what you're buying. HD dealers will not haggle on the machine but you can always find room to move on gear and servicing.

Most retailers of Jap bikes will discount from the RRP and offer discounts on gear and servicing. You should be negotiating a "ride away price" anyway.

I'd wouldnt buy a used bike from a dealer unless there was something special in the deal. Private is much cheaper if you know what to look for.

So what are you looking for?
  3. You'll get a deal on hard to move stock (models that haven't been updated for a while, are about to be updated, or have just proved less popular than the importer expected).
Even a traded bike can be bargained over if it's been there for a while.

New models and big sellers are very hard to get a deal on.

Frankly, even though the asking price is higher, I'd probably prefer to deal with a salesman who understands the bargaining process (and just wants a sale), than some owners who have an inflated sense of their bike's worth and thinks it's a war of wills.
  4. The main thing you need to get straight is deciede which bike you want brand and model before you go shopping. If you dont do this a dealer may sway you to what he wants to sell you and you will also get very confused with too many options. When you have made a choice then check out price points both private and dealer. When you have all the info required than go shopping.Dealers will negotiate a lot easier if they are sure you know what you want and what you want to pay for it not just jerking them around.
