Breaking in a new DRZ400SM

Discussion in 'Bling and Appearance' started by vicj0r, Oct 25, 2006.

  1. It's my first bike so I don't know what to expect really.

I have had "false neutrals" and odd gear change feel but that seems to be settling down a bit.

Something I have noticed is that sometimes the bike is pulling really great and then a few minutes later its not. If I stop the bike and let it sit off for a few minutes and then start her up and move out the performance is sometimes back.

I think it could be related to engine temp but I'm a mech n00b so I'm all ears if anyone has anything to suggest.

Also what kind of oil should I use for my first change ... I'm thinking of changing the oil early at 250km using this as a guide

Thanks for taking the time to read this.
  2. G'day vic, bloody nice bike for a first one.

Are you letting it warm up first?
  3. Dumb question, but are you putting the choke back, after it warms up?

If it's a new bike, Id be taking it back. that just doesn't sound right.

It may be a petrol tank breather blockage or similar.
  4. Dont be scared to to talk to your dealer. Power loss can be caused by many things but should be easily diagnosed by the dealer. The manual will specify what oil to use and when to change it. If you are new to bikes be guided by the experts.

    Nice bike and good luck.
