A MONKEY bike rider faces losing his licence after failing a breath test.

The Herald Sun believes the rider, 28, was carrying four large bottles of beer when police intercepted him in Bentleigh on Sunday night.

The rider, who was not wearing a helmet, is believed to have been on his way home from a hotel when he was caught.

He was breath tested and allegedly returned a reading of more than .120.

The rider is expected to be charged on summons with drink-driving, unlicensed driving, and failing to wear a helmet.

Police said some people appeared to believe that monkey bikes were a way of getting around drink-drive regulations
