Bike won't idle on jack

Discussion in 'Technical and Troubleshooting Torque' started by wheels44, Jun 25, 2007.

  1. I went to lube the chain on my '97 XL185 today and it will not idle when its off the ground!

It coughs and splutters and if I don't keep the revs high she just dies.

I took it off the drum it was sittiing on and once back on land she was perfectly normal again...Whats the go?
  2. this is just back wheel off the ground? how much petrol is in the tank, perhaps it was starving
  3. Yeah back wheel off the ground, front wheel only slightly off the ground. Tank bout half full....
I didn't think of that one but i guess its a sensible answer to the question.
The signs were all of low fuel supply but the engine continued to run for around 10 mins till i got
sick of holding the throttle. It just wouldn't idle so I'm not sure.
  4. Carb float level too high.

    Regards, Andrew.
